ต่อมา ป่าดงหินกอง ถูกประกาศให้เป็นป่าปิด ห้ามการทำไม้ทุกชนิด ตามมติคณะรัฐมนตรี เมื่อวันที่ 9 มกราคม 2522 กรมป่าไม้จึงเสนอคณะกรรมการอุทยานแห่งชาติ เห็นชอบให้กำหนดพื้นที่ดังกล่าวเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติ ประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่ม 908 ตอนที่ 115 ลงวันที่ 13 กรกฎาคม 2524 โดยใช้ชื่อว่า ""อุทยานแห่งชาติแก่งตะนะ"" ซึ่งเป็นชื่อตามธรรมชาติของลักษณะภูมิประเทศ ซึ่งเป็นจุดเด่นใหญ่ที่ประชาชนทั่วไปรู้จักกันดี นับเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติลำดับที่ 31 ของประเทศ
