ประวัติความเป็นมา
เป็นสถานที่ท่องเที่ยวพักผ่อนตากอากาศทางชายทะเลด้านอ่าวไทยที่มีชื่อเสียงแห่งหนึ่งของประเทศไทย สถานตากอากาศตามธรรมชาติแห่งนี้ได้กำเนิดขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2480 โดย จอมพล ป.พิบูลสงคราม นายกรัฐมนตรีในสมัยนั้น ได้ดำริให้สร้างเป็นสถานที่พักผ่อนสำหรับประชาชนทั่วไป เนื่องด้วยพื้นที่ติดชายทะเลและระยะทางไม่ไกลจากกรุงเทพฯ พ.ศ. 2482 การดำเนินการก่อสร้างสะพานสุขตาเสร็จเรียบร้อยเปิดให้บริการแก่ประชาชนทั่วไป ในชื่อเรียก "สถานตากอากาศชายทะเล บางปู" มีสำนักงานทรัพย์สินส่วนพระมหากษัตริย์เป็นผู้รับผิดชอบดูแล
พ.ศ.2484 สถานตากอากาศฯ ต้องหยุดดำเนินการ เนื่องจากกองทัพญี่ปุ่นยกพลขึ้นบกเพื่อใช้เป็นทางผ่านในการสู้รบกับฝ่ายสัมพันธมิตรในสงครามมหาเอเชียบูรพา จนเมื่อ พ.ศ.2490 เหตุการณ์สงบลงจึงได้เปิดดำเนินการใหม่อีกครั้ง ต่อมาในปี พ.ศ. 2491 กรมพลาธิการทหารบกได้รับมอบหมายให้ดูแลรับผิดชอบแทน และได้เปิดบริการขายอาหารและเครื่องดื่มที่บริเวณปลายสะพานสุขตา และจัดตั้งสถานพักฟื้นสำหรับทหารที่บาดเจ็บ
