คำสอนที่น่าสนใจของอริสโตเติลได้แก่ ความเชื่อที่ว่าโลกเรานี้ประกอบด้วยธาตุต่างๆ 4 ธาตุ ได้แก่ ดิน น้ำ ลม และไฟ
ในเรื่องเกี่ยวกับจักรวาลนั้นอริสโตเติลเข้าใจว่า โลกเราเป็นศูนย์กลางของจักรวาลโดยมีดวงดาวต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งดวงอาทิตย์โคจรรอบ ๆ สวรรค์นั้นอยู่นอกอวกาศ โลกอยู่ด้านล่างลงมา น้ำอยู่บนพื้นโลก ลมอยู่เหนือน้ำ และไฟอยู่เหนือลมอีกทีหนึ่ง ธาตุต่าง ๆ ของโลกจะเปลี่ยนแปลงเสมอ แต่ทว่าธาตุที่ประกอบเป็นสวรรค์นั้นจะไม่เปลี่ยนแปลงจะมีรูปร่างเช่นนั้นตลอดไป ซึ่งคำสอนต่อมาในปี ค.ศ. 1609 โจฮันน์ เคปเลอร์ (Johann Kepler) ได้ตั้งกฏของเคปเลอร์ ซึ่งเป็นการประกาศว่า โลกเราโคจรรอบดวงอาทิตย์เป็นวงรี เป็นการลบล้างความเชื่อเกี่ยวกับจักรวาลของอริสโตเติล
