ประวัติยิงปืนในประเทศไทย
กีฬายิงปืนเป็นกีฬาที่ประชาชนคนไทยให้ความนิยมและสนใจเมื่อไม่นานนี้เอง ความจริงแล้วคนไทยรู้จักการใช้อาวุธปืนมาช้านานแล้ว และมีการแข่งขันกันแต่ไม่เป็นที่นิยมแพร่หลายมากนัก ต่อมาบรรดานักยิงปืนทั้งหลายได้เล็งเห็นว่าควรจะได้มีการแข่งขันยิงปืนตามแบบและกติกาและกติกาสากลนิยม จึงมีการจัดตั้งคณะกรรมการเพื่อจัดการแข่งขันยิงปืนขึ้นตามแบบและกติกาสากลนิยม จึงได้มีการจัดตั้งสมาคมยิงปืนสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย โดยจดทะเบียนก่อตั้งอย่างถูกต้อง เมื่อวันที่ 27 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2501

ภายหลังจากที่สมาคมยิงปืนสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทยในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ได้ก่อตั้งขึ้นแล้ว สมาคมฯจึงได้คัดเลือกนักกีฬายิงปืนส่งเข้าร่วมการแข่งขันกับนานาชาติ เช่น การแข่งขันซีเกมส์ เอเชียนเกมส์ และโอลิมปิกเกมส์เป็นครั้งแรกในการแข่งขันกีฬาโอลิมปิก ครั้งที่ 17 ณ กรุงโรม ประเทศอิตาลี ในปี พ.ศ. 2503

ในปี พ.ศ. 2501 สมาคมยิงปืนสมัครเล่นแห่งประเทศไทย จึงได้สมัครเข้าเป็นสมาชิกของสหพันธ์ยิงปืนแห่งเอเชีย และสมาชิกของสหพันธ์ยิงปืนนานาชาติในปีเดียวกัน ซึ่งประเภทการแข่งขันยิงปืนตามแบบสหพันธ์ยิงปืนนานาชาติ ซึ่งจัดการแข่งขันในกีฬาโอลิมปิกมี 7 ประเภท คือ
