หลักการเปลี่ยนคำกริยาให้เป็น Past Tense
การเปลี่ยนรูปคำกริยาเป็น past tense มี 2 วิธี คือ

  การเติม ed ที่ท้ายคำกริยาช่องที่ 1 (Regular Verb)
คำกริยาที่เปลี่ยนรูปใหม่ ( Irregular Verb)
หลักการเติมเติม ed ที่ท้ายคำกริยามีดังนี้

1.คำกริยาโดยทั่วไปเมื่อเปลี่ยนเป็นคำกริยาช่องที่ 2 ให้เติม ed ได้เลย เช่น
clean – cleaned
help – helped
watch – watched
2. คำกริยาที่ลงท้ายด้วย e อยู่แล้ว ให้เติม d ได้ทันทีเช่น
like – liked
bake – baked
live – lived
3. คำกริยาที่เป็นพยางค์เดียว มีสระตัวเดียว ตัวสะกดตัวเดียว ให้เพิ่มตัวสะกดตัวท้ายอีกหนึ่งตัวก่อน แล้วจึงเติม ed เช่น
stop – stopped
fit – fitted
plan – planned
4. คำกริยาที่มี 2 พยางค์ ออกเสียงเน้นหนักพยางค์หลังให้เพิ่มตัวสะกดตัวท้ายอีกหนึ่งตัวก่อน แล้วจึงเติม ed
prefer – preferred
control – controlled
5. คำกริยาที่ลงท้ายด้วย yและหน้า y เป็นพยัญชนะ ให้เปลี่ยน y เป็น i แล้วจึงเติม ed เช่น
study – studied
cry – cried
carry – carried
แต่ถ้าหน้า y เป็นสระให้เติม ed ได้เลย เช่น
play played
stay – stayed
