พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงตระหนักถึงสภาพปัญหาการชะล้างพังทลายของดินและการสูญเสียหน้าดินที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ จึงทรงศึกษาถึงศักยภาพของ “หญ้าแฝก” ซึ่งเป็นพืชพื้นบ้านของไทย ที่มีคุณสมบัติพิเศษในการช่วยป้องกันการชะล้างพังทลายของหน้าดินและอนุรักษ์ความชุ่มชื้นใต้ดิน ซึ่งมีวิธีการปลูกแบบง่าย ๆเกษตรกรสามารถดำเนินการได้เองโดยไม่ต้องให้การดูแลหลังการปลูกมากนัก ทั้งประหยัดค่าใช้จ่ายกว่าวิธีอื่น ๆ อีกด้วย จึงได้พระราชทานพระราชดำริให้ดำเนินการศึกษาทดลองเกี่ยวกับหญ้าแฝก ลักษณะของหญ้าแฝก หญ้าแฝกมีชื่อสามัญเป็นภาษาอังกฤษว่าVetiver Grass มีด้วยกัน 2 สายพันธุ์ คือ หญ้าแฝกดอน (Vetiveria nemoralis A.
