การทำโครงงานวิจัยเกี่ยวกับการรู้จำตัวเลขจากป้ายทะเบียนรถยนต์ ได้แนวคิดจากการที่ผู้วิจัยเล็งเห็นปัญหาจากอุปกรณ์หรือโปรแกรมอ่านป้ายทะเบียนรถยนต์ตามสถานที่ต่าง ๆ ทำให้อาจเกิดปัญหาผิดพลาดได้ ผู้วิจัยจึงได้ทำการศึกษาการใช้โปแกรม MATLAB และ WEKA ซึ่งเป็นเทคโนโลยีในการประมวลผลรูปภาพรูปแบบหนึ่งเพื่อให้ได้ผลลัพธ์ออกมา โดยโปรแกรม MATLAB จะทำการประมวลผลรูปภาพทำให้ได้ค่า Feature (ค่าตัวเลขทั้ง 41 ค่า) นำไปรู้จำด้วยโปรแกรม WEKA ให้โปรแกรมได้แสดงผลลัพธ์จากการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลออกมา ทั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยได้ทำการทดลอง 3 ครั้ง
เพื่อให้ได้ผลลัพธ์ที่ดีออกมา โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งการทดลองที่ข้อมูลได้เรียนรู้มากยิ่งขึ้นเท่าไรโปรแกรมจะยิ่งเรียนรู้และให้ผลลัพธ์ที่ดีและแม่นยำมากที่สุด
