โครงงานนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ นำระบบกำหนดตำแหน่งบนพื้นผิวโลก (GPS) มาใช้เชื่อมโยงกับระบบติดตามขบวนรถกลุ่มสินค้า การรถไฟแห่งประเทศไทย ให้มีประสิทธิภาพ ระบบกำหนดตำแหน่งบนพื้นผิวโลก ประกอบด้วย อุปกรณ์กำหนดตำแหน่งบนพื้นผิวโลกที่ติดอยู่กับขบวนรถสินค้า และโปรแกรมติดตามขบวนรถสินค้าสำหรับใช้งานกับอุปกรณ์กำหนดตำแหน่งบนพื้นผิวโลก โดยใช้ภาษา PHP โปรแกรม MySQL เป็นฐานข้อมูล การนำ GPS เข้ามาใช้ สามารถระบุตำแหน่งของขบวนรถสินค้า ตลอดเส้นทางที่ขบวนรถวิ่ง โดยสามารถตรวจเช็คสถานะของขบวนรถสินค้า ผ่านเว็ปไซต์ www.traingps.net ทำการทดสอบระบบการใช้งานจริงในขบวนรถหมายเลข 651 ต้นทางสถานีบางละมุง ถึงปลายทางสถานีนครสวรรค์ จากการประเมินความพึงพอใจของผู้ใช้งานที่มีต่อการทำงานของระบบติดตามขบวนรถ โดยระบบกำหนดตำแหน่งบนพื้นผิวโลก มาใช้เชื่อมโยงกับระบบติดตามขบวนรถกลุ่มสินค้า ใน 4 ด้าน ได้แก่ ด้านประโยชน์ต่อการใช้งาน ด้านความสามารถในการใช้งานให้เข้ากับระบบติดตามขบวนรถ ด้านความน่าเชื่อถือของระบบ และด้านทัศนคติที่ดีต่อการใช้งาน ผลการศึกษาพบว่าระบบที่พัฒนาขึ้นมีคุณภาพโดยรวมอยู่ในระดับดี ( xˉ = 4.32, S.D. =0.35) แสดงว่า เทคโนโลยีที่นำมาใช้เชื่อมโยงกับระบบติดตามขบวนรถกลุ่มสินค้า สามารถนำไปใช้งานได้จริง และบรรลุวัตถุประสงค์ตามที่กำหนด
