เป็นค่ายทหารเรือไทยที่มีความสำคัญทางประวัติศาสตร์ สมเด็จพระเจ้าเอกทัศน์ ทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ยกกองทัพเรือมาตั้งค่ายที่ค่ายบางกุ้ง เรียกว่า "ค่ายบางกุง้" โดยสร้างกำแพงล้อมวัดบางกุ้งให้อยู่กลางค่าย เพื่อเป็นที่ยึดเหนี่ยวจิตใจและเป็นที่เคารพบูชาของทหาร ภายหลังเสียกรุงครั้งที่ 2 ค่ายบางกุ้งก็ร้างไปจนกระทั่งพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชทรงสถาปนากรุงธนบุรี เป็นราชธานีจึงทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ชาวจีนจากระยอง ชลบุรี ราชบุรี และกาญจนบุรีรวบรวมผู้คนมาตั้งกองทหารรักษาค่าย จึงมีชื่อเรียกอีกหนึ่งว่า "ค่ายจีนบางกุ้ง"

ในปี พ.ศ. 2311 พระเจ้ากรุงอังวะทรงยกทัพผ่านกาญจนบุรีมาล้อมค่ายจีนบางกุ้ง สมเด็จพระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชทรงโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้พระมหามนตรี (บุญมา) เป็นแม่ทัพยกไปช่วยเหลือทหารจีนขับไล่กองทัพพม่าทำให้ข้าศึกแตกพ่าย หลังจากนั้นค่ายบางกุ้งแห่งนี้ก็ถูกปล่อยให้รกร้างเกือบ 200 ปี จนมาถึง พ.ศ.2510 กระทรวงศึกษาธิการ จึงได้ตั้งเป็นค่ายลูกเสือขึ้น (ปัจจุบันได้ยกเลิกไปแล้ว) และได้สร้างศาลพระเจ้าตากสินไว้เป็นอนุสรณ์

โบสถ์ปรกโพธิ์
