เกาะเกร็ด

อำเภอปากเกร็ด จ.นนทบุรี
เกาะเกร็ด เกิดขึ้นจากการขุดคลองลัดแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ตรงส่วนที่เป็นแหลม ในสมัยสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวท้ายสระ แห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยา เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2265 เรียกว่า “คลองลัดเกร็ดน้อย” (คลองลัดเกร็ดใหญ่อยู่ที่จังหวัดปทุมธานี ขุดลัดแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาตอนท้ายอำเภอสามโคกมาทางใต้ถึงคลองขวางเชียงราก) ต่อมากระแสน้ำเปลี่ยนทิศทางแรงขึ้นเซาะตลิ่งทำให้คลองขยาย แผ่นดินตรงแหลมจึงกลายเป็นเกาะ ชื่อที่เรียกนั้น ชื่อเดิมเรียกว่า เกาะศาลากุน

เกาะเกร็ดมีความเจริญมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา สังเกตได้จากวัดวาอารามต่างๆบนเกาะส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นศิลปะในสมัยอยุธยา แต่คงจะมาร้างคนเมื่อพม่ามายึดกรุงศรีอยุธยาได้ หลังจากกอบกู้เอกราชได้ พระเจ้าตากสินมหาราชจึงโปรดให้ชาวมอญที่เข้ารีตมาตั้งถิ่นฐานที่นี่ ชาวมอญบนเกาะเกร็ดนั้นมีทั้งที่เข้ามาในสมัยกรุงธนบุรี และสมัยรัชกาลที่ 2 ต่อมาเมื่อตั้งอำเภอปากเกร็ดขึ้นแล้วเกาะศาลากุน จึงมีฐานะเป็นตำบลและเรียกว่าตำบลเกาะเกร็ด เกาะนี้จึงมีชื่อว่า เกาะเกร็ด

การคมนาคมบนเกาะจะใช้รถจักรยานและรถจักรยานยนต์
สถานที่น่าสนใจบนเกาะ ได้แก่

วัดปรมัยยิกาวาส (วัดปากอ่าว) ในวัดนี้มีสิ่งที่น่าชมอยู่หลายอย่าง ที่ท่าเรือหน้าวัดจะพบปราสาทไม้ห้ายอด ซึ่งเคยเป็นที่ตั้งเหม(โลงศพมอญ) ของอดีตเจ้าอาวาสตั้งตระหง่านอยู่ ส่วนพระอุโบสถมีการตกแต่งด้วยวัสดุนำเข้าจากอิตาลี ศิลปะยุโรปแบบพระราชนิยมในสมัยรัชกาลที่ 5 แต่กระนั้นพระองค์ยังรักษาธรรมเนียมเดิม โดยรับสั่งให้ที่นี่ริเริ่มการสวดเป็นภาษามอญ และปัจจุบันนี้ ที่นี่เป็นวัดเดียวที่ยังเก็บรักษาพระไตรปิฏกภาษามอญไว้ พระประธานในพระอุโบสถนั้นเป็นพระปาง มารวิชัย ฝีพระหัตถ์ของพระองค์เจ้าประดิษฐานวรการ ผู้ที่สร้างพระสยามเทวาธิราช รัชกาลที่ 5 ทรงยกย่องว่าพระประธานองค์นี้งามด้วย ฝีพระพักตร์ดูมีชีวิตชีวาเหมือนคนจริง เอกลักษณ์ของมอญอีกอย่างหนึ่งในวัดนี้คือ เจดีย์ทรงรามัญที่จำลองแบบมาจากพระธาตุเจดีย์มุเตา เมืองหงสาวดี ตั้งอยู่ด้านเหนือของวัดติดกับแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ซึ่งคนมอญนับถือมาก ภายในบรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ
พระวิหาร ประดิษฐานพระพุทธไสยาสน์สมัยอยุธยาตอนปลาย ขนาดยาว 9.50 เมตร ภาพจิตรกรรมที่เพดานนั้นแปลกตากว่าที่อื่น เป็นภาพลายปฐมจุลจอมเกล้า หน้าพระวิหารประดับตราพระเกี้ยว เป็นตราประจำพระองค์ของพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ด้านหลังพระวิหารประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปประจำจังหวัดนนทบุรี “พระนนทมุนินท์” เป็นพระพุทธรูปสมัยอยุธยาตอนปลาย ปางขัดสมาธิเพชร ประดิษฐานอยู่ในบุษบกแบบมอญ(จองพารา) สลักโดยฝีมือช่างที่นี่ ที่มุขเด็จหน้าวิหารประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปหินอ่อน ซึ่ง ซาง ซิว ซูน ชาวพม่าถวายให้กับรัชกาลที่ 5 พระวิหารเปิดทุกวันตั้งแต่ 9.00-16.00 น.
