งานบุญหลวงอันมีเอกลักษณ์เป็นที่รู้จักกันดี คือการละเล่นผีตาโขน งานประเพณีที่มีการจัดกันมาหลังจากการก่อสร้างพระธาตุศรีสองรักไม่นาน ถือเป็นหนึ่งในฮิตสิบสองคองสิบสี่ของภาคอีสาน การแห่ผีตาโขนเป็นประเพณีจำลองเหตุการณ์ในชาดกเมื่อครั้งที่พระเวสสันดรและนางมัทรีเดินทางกลับออกจากป่าเข้าสู่เมือง บรรดาผีป่าหลายคนและสัตว์ นานาชนิดอาลัยรัก จึงพากันแห่แหนมาส่งทั้งสองพระองค์กลับเมือง เรียกกันว่า "ผีตามคน" ก่อนเพี้ยนมาเป็น "ผีตาโขน" อย่างในปัจจุบัน ผีตาโขนในขบวนแห่จะแยกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ ผีตาโขนใหญ่ เป็นหุ่นรูปผีทำจากไม้ไผ่สาน สูงใหญ่กว่าคนธรรมดา 2 เท่า มีเพียง 2 ตัว คือ ผีตาโขนชาย 1 ตัว และหญิง 1 ตัว ส่วนผีตาโขนเล็กใช้วิธีประดับตกแต่งรูปร่างหน้าตาให้เป็นผีด้วยเศษวัสดุที่หาได้ในท้องถิ่น
