งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ในการศึกษาวรรณกรรมสองเล่มคือ เพื่อศึกษาเกี่ยวกับผลกระทบของความรุนแรงที่ผู้อ่านได้รับจากการอ่านวรรณกรรมสองเล่มจากสองประเทศคือ วรรณกรรมอเมริกันและวรรณกรรมอังกฤษ ซึ่งวรรณกรรมทั้งสองประเทศต่างส่งผลกระทบต่อจิตใจของผู้อ่าน สังคมและการเมืองของทั้งสองประเทศ จากการวิจัยพบว่า ทั้งสองวรรณกรรมมีส่วนคล้ายคลึงกันคือ ทั้งสองวรรณกรรมต่างมีวัตถุประสงค์อกถึงความเหลื่อมล้ำทางสังคม ซึ่งวรรณกรรมเรื่องหนึ่งเก้าแปดสี่ (Nineteen Eighty-four) ส่งผลกระทบต่อการเมืองของประเทศอังกฤษ สภาพสังคมที่เหลื่อมล้ำกัน และยังส่งผลกระทบไปถึงความรู้สึกหดหู่ใจของผู้อ่าน ส่วนวรรณกรรมเรื่องผู้บริสุทธิ์ (To Kill the Mockingbird) ส่งผลกระทบต่อสภาพสังคมที่ให้ความสำคัญกับคนในสังคมไม่เท่ากัน ยังคงมีความเหลื่อมล้ำทางสังคม ความเหลื่อมล้ำทางสังคมนั้นยังส่งผลกระทบต่อจิตใจของผู้อ่านเป็นอย่างมากอีกด้วย
