ประวัติความเป็นมา

พระราชวังสนามจันทร์ ตั้งอยู่ที่ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดนครปฐม
ห่างจากกรุงเทพฯ ลงไปทางใต้ 56 กิโลเมตร
ตั้งอยู่ในอาณาบริเวณซึ่งเดิมเรียกว่า เนินปราสาท
สันนิษฐานว่า เดิมคงเคยเป็นพระราชวังของกษัตริย์ในสมัยโบราณ
ใกล้กับเนินปราสาทมีสระน้ำใหญ่แห่งหนึ่ง ซึ่งมีชื่อเรียกขานกันมาแต่เดิมว่า
สระน้ำจันทร์ ( ปัจจุบันชาวบ้าน เรียกว่า สระบัว ) อยู่หน้าโบสถ์พราหมณ์
ครั้นต่อมาพระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 6

ซึ่งต่อมาได้เลื่อนยศเป็น พระยาวิศุกรรมศิลป์ประสิทธิ์ ( น้อย ศิลปี )
เป็นผู้ออกแบบและดำเนินการก่อสร้างพระราชวังแห่งนี้ขึ้นเมื่อปีพุทธศักราช 2450
ซึ่งตรงกับปลายรัชกาลพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5
การก่อสร้างพระที่นั่ง และพระตำหนักต่างๆ
ได้ดำเนินการติดต่อกันนานถึง 4 ปี จึงแล้วเสร็จในปีพุทธศักราช 2454
พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 6
พระราชทานนามว่า " พระราชวังสนามจันทร์ "


พระราชวังสนามจันทร์ นอกจากเป็นที่แปรพระราชฐานแล้ว
พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว
ยังมีพระราชดำริในการสร้างพระราชวังสนามจันทร์ไว้เป็นที่มั่น
เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมสำหรับรับวิกฤตการณ์ของประเทศอันเกิดขึ้นได้
