ลักษณะภูมิอากาศเอเชียใต้มีภูมิอากาศแบบมรสุมเขตร้อนและทุ่งหญ้าเขตร้อนเนื่องจากได้รับอิทธิพลของมรสุมตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือและมรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้แต่บริเวณที่อยู่เหนือเส้นทรอปิกออฟแคนเซอร์ ขึ้นไปจะมีอากาศแบบเมืองหนาวภาคพื้นทวีปและมีอุณหภูมิต่ากว่าทางใต้ เอเชียใต้มี 4 ฤดูคือ ฤดูหนาว ร้อนฝน และช่วงเปลี่ยนฤดูระหว่างช่วงต่อของมรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้และมรสุมตะวันออกเฉียง-เหนือ มักเกิดพายุหมุนเขตร้อนที่เรียกว่า "ไซโคลน" ก่อตัวขึ้นในอ่าวเบงกอลแล้วพัดสู่ฝั่ง ทาให้เกิดฝนตกหนักและน้าท่วมรุนแรงก่อความเสียหายแก่แถบชายฝั่งทุกปี

ภูมิอากาศ แบ่งออกเป็น 4 แบบ ดังนี้คือ
1. ภูมิอากาศแบบทะเลทรายและทุ่งหญ้ากึ่งทะเลทราย ได้แก่รอบๆทะเลทรายธาร์ (หรือทะเลทรายเกรตอินเดีย)ในปากีสถานและอินเดียอยู่ทางตะวันออกของลุ่มแม่น้าสินธุ
2. ภูมิอากาศแบบมรสุมเขตร้อนและทุ่งหญ้าเมืองร้อน
ภูมิอากาศแบบมรสุมเขตร้อนได้แก่ชายฝั่งตะวันตกของอินเดีย ชายฝั่งตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของศรีลังกา
ภูมิอากาศแบบทุ่งหญ้าเมืองร้อน ได้แก่ รอบนอกของเขตทุ่งหญ้ากึ่งทะเลทรายในอินเดียและศรีลังกา
ในส่วนที่เหลือ
3. ภูมิอากาศแบบอบอุ่นชื้น ทางตอนใต้ของเทือกเขาหิมาลัย ได้แก่ ภาคใต้ของเนปาล ภาคเหนือของปากีสถานและอินเดีย
