จังหวัดสุโขทัย กรมศิลปากร และ การท่องเที่ยวแห่งประเทศไทย จึงร่วมกันจัดงานประเพณีลอยกระทง เผาเทียนเล่นไฟ จังหวัดสุโขทัย ขึ้นเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2520 เพื่อเป็นการฟื้นฟูประวัติศาสตร์ประเพณีลอยกระทงและส่งเสริมการเดินทางท่อง เที่ยวจังหวัดสุโขทัย โดยให้ชื่องานตามคำในศิลาจารึกว่า "งานเผาเทียน เล่นไฟ" จุดเน้นที่สำคัญของงานนี้ คือ การฟื้นฟูประเพณีลอยกระทง เผาเทียน เล่นไฟ พลุ ตะไล ไฟพะเนียง ดอกไม้ไฟชนิดต่าง ๆ จังหวัดสุโขทัย โดยกำหนดจัดขึ้นทุกปี ในวันเพ็ญเดือน 12 (ขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 12) หรือประมาณเดือนพฤศจิกายน ของทุกปี
