การศึกษานี้เป็นงานวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของชุมชน รองโรงแยกก๊าซธรรมชาติไทย-มาเลเซีย จังหวัดสงขลา ผู้วิจัยใช้ระบบสารสนเทศภูมิศาสตร์ (GIS) เพื่อศึกษาหาพื้นที่ที่อยู่ในรัศมี 5 กิโลเมตร รอบโรงแยกก๊าซธรรมชาติฯ จากนั้นทำการศึกษาข้อมูลสภาพเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของชุมชน ระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2540-2554 ผู้วิจัยทำการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลจากการสนทนากลุ่ม เพื่อยืนยันข้อมูลทุติยภูมิข้างต้น และเพื่อศึกษาการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของชุมชน จากนั้นจึงทำการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกผู้ให้ข้อมูลสำคัญ เพื่อให้ได้มาซึ่งข้อมูลเชิงลึกที่สอดคล้องกับวัตถุประสงค์
