ประวัติของพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งนี้สร้างขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 2447 สมัยเจ้ามหาชีวิตศรีสว่างวงศ์สืบทอดต่อมาถึงสมัยเจ้ามหาชีวิตศรีสว่างวัฒนา พระมหากษัตริย์องค์สุดท้ายของลาวภายหลังจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองหรือที่ชาวลาวเรียกว่า “การปลดปล่อย”
