ทุนการศึกษาพระราชทาน
นับตั้งแต่พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรมินทรมหาภูมิพลอดุลยเดชเสด็จขึ้นครองราชสมบัติเป็นประมุขแห่งประเทศไทย เป็นต้นมา พระองค์ได้ทรงประกอบพระราชกรณียกิจในด้านต่าง ๆ อันเป็นประโยชน์แก่ชาวไทยตลอดพระชนมายุของพระองค์ โดยพระราชกรณียกิจที่สำคัญของพระองค์ คือ การเสด็จพระราชดำเนินเยือนประชาชนในท้องถิ่นต่าง ๆ ของประเทศ ดังในปฐมพระบรมราชโองการในระหว่างพระราชพิธีบรมราชาภิเษก เมื่อวันที่ 5 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2493 ว่า เราจะครองแผ่นดินโดยธรรม เพื่อประโยชน์สุขแก่มหาชนชาวสยาม

ในปี พ.ศ. 2539 จากการที่พระองค์ทรงงานเพื่อประชาชนอย่างหนัก จึงได้มีการลงนามโดยประชาชนชาวไทยเพื่อถวายสมัญญานามให้ทรงเป็น "มหาราช"


พระราชกรณียกิจด้านการเกษตรและการยกระดับสภาพชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของประชาชน

การเกษตรนั้นถือได้ว่าเป็นทั้งรากฐานและชีวิตสำหรับประเทศของเรา เพราะคนไทยเราส่วนใหญ่เป็นผู้มีอาชีพทางเกษตรกรรม. ข้าพเจ้าจึงมีความเห็นเสมอมาว่า วิธีการพัฒนาที่เหมาะสมแก่ประเทศเราอย่างยิ่ง ก็คือจะต้องทำนุบำรุงเกษตรกรรมทุกสาขาให้พัฒนาก้าวหน้า เพื่อยกระดับฐานะความเป็นอยู่ของเกษตรกรทุกระดับให้สูงขึ้น

ด้านการเกษตร พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงให้ความสนใจด้านนี้ พระองค์ได้เสด็จเยี่ยม ไต่ถามความทุกข์สุขของประชาชน และรับฟังข้อปัญหาเกิดเป็นโครงการตามพระราชดำริต่าง ๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นการชลประทาน การพัฒนาดิน การวิจัยพันธุ์พืชและปศุสัตว์ เป็นต้น ดังหัวข้อต่อไปนี้


ทรัพยากรน้ำ

ทรัพยากรน้ำเป็นปัจจัยที่สำคัญยิ่งต่อการอุปโภคบริโภคและการเกษตร พระราชดำรัสที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว เคยพระราชทานแก่ คณะผู้อำนวยการสำนักงาน คณะกรรมการพิเศษเพื่อประสานงานโครงการอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ ว่า

โครงการตามพระราชดำริของพระองค์ มีทั้งการแก้ปัญหาภัยแล้ง ปัญหาอุทกภัย รวมไปถึงการบำบัดน้ำเสีย โครงการพัฒนาแหล่งน้ำมีทั้งโครงการขนาดใหญ่สามารถช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาทั้งภัยแล้งและน้ำท่วมได้ เช่น เขื่อนป่าสักชลสิทธิ์ เขื่อนดินที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทย ที่จังหวัดลพบุรี จนถึงโครงการขนาดกลางและเล็กจำพวก ฝาย อ่างเก็บน้ำ โดยพระองค์ทรงคำนึงถึงลักษณะของภูมิประเทศ สภาพแหล่งน้ำ ความเหมาะสมด้านเศรษฐกิจ ประชาชนที่ได้รับประโยชน์และผลกระทบจากโครงการ มาเป็นหลักในการพิจารณา พระองค์ได้ทรงวิจัยและริเริ่มโครงการฝนหลวง เพื่อช่วยบรรเทาภัยแล้งสำหรับพื้นที่นอกเขตชลประทาน

ในเขตกรุงเทพและปริมณฑลที่ประสบปัญหาน้ำท่วม และน้ำเน่าเสียในคูคลอง ทรงมีพระราชดำริเรื่องแก้มลิง ควบคุมการระบายน้ำจากแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา แม่น้ำท่าจีน ลำคลองต่าง ๆ ลงสู่อ่าวไทยตามจังหวะการขึ้นลงของระดับน้ำทะเล ทั้งยังเป็นการใช้น้ำดีไล่น้ำเสียออกจากคลองได้อีกด้วย เครื่องกลเติมอากาศ กังหันชัยพัฒนา ในการปรับปรุงคุณภาพน้ำโดยการเพิ่มออกซิเจน เป็นสิ่งประดิษฐ์หนึ่งของพระองค์ที่ได้รับสิทธิบัตรจาก กรมทรัพย์สินทางปัญญา กระทรวงพานิชย์ เมื่อวันที่ 2 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2536


พระราชกรณียกิจด้านการแพทย์และสาธารณสุข

พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงมีความห่วงใยประชาชนชาวไทยในทุกด้าน โดยเฉพาะในด้านสุขภาพอนามัย ซึ่งพระองค์ทรงถือว่าปัญหาด้านสุขภาพอนามัยของประชาชนนั้น เป็นปัญหาสำคัญที่ต้องได้รับการแก้ไข ดังพระราชดำรัสที่ว่า ถ้าคนเรามีสุขภาพเสื่อมโทรม ก็จะไม่สามารถพัฒนาชาติได้ เพราะทรัพยากรที่สำคัญของประเทศชาติ ก็คือพลเมืองนั่นเอง พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงเป็นห่วง และเอื้ออาทรต่อทุกข์สุขของพสกนิกรอย่างจริงจัง โดยเฉพาะความทุกข์ของไพร่ฟ้าจากพยาธิภัย ในการเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปทรงเยี่ยมราษฎรตามท้องที่ต่างๆ ทุกครั้ง พระองค์จะทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้มีคณะแพทย์ ทั้งแพทย์ที่เป็นผู้เชี่ยวชาญในแต่ละสาขาจากโรงพยาบาลต่างๆ และแพทย์อาสาสมัคร โดยเสด็จพระราชดำเนินไปในขบวนอย่างใกล้ชิด เพื่อที่จะได้รักษาผู้ป่วยไข้ได้ทันที นอกเหนือจากนั้น พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวยังได้ริเริ่มหลายโครงการด้านการแพทย์และสาธารณสุข ดังนี้
