โครงงานวิทยาศาสตร์เรื่องท่อดักจับคราบน้ำมันนี้ ประดิษฐ์มาเพื่อใช้ดูดซับคราบน้ำมันในท่อน้ำทิ้งก่อนปล่อยลงสู่แหล่งน้ำธรรมชาติ จากการศึกษาข้อมูลเรื่องดอกธูปฤๅษี พบว่าดอกธูปฤๅษีใช้ดูดซับน้ำมันได้อย่างดีเยี่ยม เนื่องจากโครงสร้างทางชีวภาพมีส่วนประกอบจากคาร์บอนเช่นเดียวกับน้ำมัน จึงมีคุณสมบัติที่จับตัวเข้าด้วยกันได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ จากการที่ได้ศึกษาและได้พัฒนาท่อดักจับคราบน้ำมัน จึงได้รูปแบบท่อที่มีลักษณะดังนี้ ลักษณะภายนอกประกอบด้วย 3 ส่วน คือ 1.ท่อน้ำเข้า อยู่ส่วนบนสุด สำหรับต่อเข้ากับท่อน้ำทิ้ง 2.ท่อ PVC ขนาดใหญ่ ภายในบรรจุตะแกรงกรองเศษอาหารและชุดไส้กรองจากดอกธูปฤๅษี 3.ท่อน้ำออก อยู่บริเวณส่วนล่าง สำหรับปล่อยน้ำทิ้งที่ผ่านการกรองลงสู่แหล่งน้ำ ในส่วนของชุดไส้กรองถูกออกแบบเป็นชั้นตะแกรงสำหรับบรรจุดอกธูปฤาษี จำนวน .... ชั้น ซึ่งมีความเหมาะสมในการดูดซับคราบน้ำมันและไม่กีดขวางการไหลของน้ำ โดยที่ชั้นไส้กรองถูกยึดด้วยแกนกลางเดียวกัน เพื่อให้สะดวกต่อการถอดเปลี่ยนไส้กรอง ส่วนหลักการทำงานของท่อ คือ เมื่อน้ำจากท่อน้ำทิ้งไหลเข้าสู่ท่อนำ้เข้า น้ำจะไหลลงสู่ด้านล่างโดยผ่านตะแกรงกรองเศษอาหาร ก่อนจะไหลผ่านชุดไส้กรอง ลงไปรวมกันด้านล่างท่อ และเมื่อน้ำสูงถึงระดับหนึ่งจะไหลออกทางท่อน้ำออกลงสู่แหล่งน้ำ
จากการทดลองนำท่อดักจับคราบน้ำมันไปใช้จริง พบว่าสามารถดูดซับคราบน้ำมันปริมาณ .... ลิตรได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ ซึ่งรูปแบบการวางท่อในแนวตั้งจะช่วยลดแรงดันน้ำและเพิ่มความเร็วในการไหล จึงทำให้น้ำทิ้งสามารถไหลผ่านชุดไส้กรองได้สะดวก รวมทั้งไม่มีผลกระทบต่อสิ่งแวดล้อมและเป็นการลดการแพร่กระจายของวัชพืชที่ไม่มีมูลค่าและช่วยแก้ปัญหามลภาวะทางน้ำ
