ความเป็นมา

 
                สมัย ฯพณฯ จอมพลสฤษดิ์ ธนะรัชต์ ดำรงตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรี คณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติการประชุมเมื่อ วันที่  7  ตุลาคม  พ.ศ. 2502   ให้กระทรวงเกษตร   (กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์ในปัจจุบัน)   ดำเนินการจัดตั้งป่าเทือกเขาสลอบ ท้องที่จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี และป่าอื่นๆ  ในท้องที่จังหวัดต่าง ๆ รวม 14 ป่า ให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติกรมป่าไม้จึงได้ส่งเจ้าหน้าที่ไปดำเนินการสำรวจหาข้อมูลเบื้องต้น ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2504 - 2515 โดยใช้บริเวณน้ำตกเอราวัณเป็นศูนย์กลางการสำรวจ พบว่าบริเวณป่าเทือกเขาสลอบ จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี มีธรรมชาติที่สวยงามเป็นพิเศษและมีทรัพยากรธรรมชาติที่อุดมสมบูรณ์ ตามรายงานผลการสำรวจอุทยานแห่งชาติเขาสลอบ ลงวันที่ 29 พฤษภาคม  พ.ศ.2516  ของนายวิจารณ์    สาระนาค   นักวิชาการป่าไม้โทแต่ทั้งนี้พื้นที่ดังกล่าวอยู่ในเขตหวงห้ามที่ดินตามพระราชกฤษฎีกากำหนดเขตหวงห้ามที่ดิน    ในท้องที่อำเภอเมือง    อำเภอวังขนาย   อำเภอบ้านทวน และอำเภอวังกะ จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี ประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา    เล่ม 55 ลงวันที่ 17 ตุลาคม พ.ศ.2481 โดยให้รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงกลาโหมและกระทรวงมหาดไทย    มีหน้าที่รักษาการให้เป็นไปตามพระราชกฤษฎีกาดังกล่าว กรมป่าไม้จึงรายงานให้กระทรวงเกษตรและสหกรณ์       แจ้งให้กระทรวงกลาโหมและกระทรวงมหาดไทย    ตามหนังสือ  ที่  กษ  0705/20251 และ 20252   ลงวันที่ 7 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ.2515    ขอเพิกถอนพื้นที่เขตหวงห้ามที่ดินบางส่วนที่เป็นป่าเทือกเขาสลอบ เพื่อเป็นพื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติซึ่งคณะกรรมการอุทยานแห่งชาติได้มีมติในการประชุมครั้งที่ 6/2517 เมื่อวันที่ 26 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.2517 เห็นชอบให้ดำเนินการจัดตั้งอุทยานแห่งชาติได้ และให้ใช้ชื่อว่า   “อุทยานแห่งชาติเอราวัณ”   ตามความนิยมและคุ้นเคยของประชาชนที่รู้จักน้ำตกเอราวัณเป็นอย่างดี กระทรวงกลาโหมแจ้งไม่ขัดข้อง ตามหนังสือกระทรวงกลาโหม ที่ กห.0318/23505 ลงวันที่ 21 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2517 และกระทรวงมหาดไทยไม่ขัดข้อง    กรมป่าไม้จึงได้ดำเนินการขอเพิกถอนที่ดินหวงห้ามบริเวณดังกล่าว   โดยมีพระราชกฤษฎีกาเพิกถอนที่ดินหวงห้ามดังกล่าวลงประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เมื่อวันที่ 19 มิถุนายน พ.ศ.2518    และได้มีพระราชกฤษฎีกากำหนดบริเวณที่ดินป่าเขาสลอบ     ในท้องที่ตำบลไทรโยค  ตำบลท่าเสา   ตำบลลุ่มสุ่ม อำเภอไทรโยค   ตำบลหนองเป็ด ตำบลท่ากระดาน   อำเภอศรีสวัสดิ์   และตำบลช่องสะเดา อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดกาญจนบุรี    ให้เป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติในปี   พ.ศ. 2518  ซึ่งประกาศไว้ในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่ม 92 ตอนที่ 114   ลงวันที่ 19  มิถุนายน  พ.ศ.2518   นับเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติแห่งที่ 11 ของประเทศ
