ชื่อจังหวัดสระแก้ว มีที่มาจากชื่อสระน้ำโบราณในพื้นที่อำเภอเมืองสระแก้ว ซึ่งมีอยู่ 2 สระ ในสมัยกรุงธนบุรี ประมาณปี พ.ศ. 2324 พระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช เมื่อครั้งทรงเป็นสมเด็จเจ้าพระยามหากษัตริย์ศึกเป็นแม่ทัพยกไปตีประเทศกัมพูชา (เขมร) ได้แวะพักกองทัพที่บริเวณสระน้ำทั้งสองแห่งนี้ กองทัพได้อาศัยน้ำจากสระใช้สอย ได้ขนานนามสระทั้งสองว่า "สระแก้ว สระขวัญ" และได้นำน้ำจากสระทั้งสองแห่งนี้ใช้ในการประกอบพิธีถือน้ำพิพัฒน์สัตยา โดยถือว่าเป็นน้ำบริสุทธิ์
