เครื่องวัดค่า pH อาศัยหลักการวัดความต่างศักย์ไฟฟ้า (electrical potential) ที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่าง Indicator electrode และ Reference electrode ซึ่งจุ่มอยู่ในสารละลาย แล้วเปลี่ยนค่าความต่างศักย์ไฟฟ้า ให้เป็นค่า pH โดยการเทียบค่ากับสารละลายบัฟเฟอร์มาตรฐาน
