พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้พระราชทานพระราชดำริแก่นายรุ่งเรือง จุลชาต อธิบดีกรมชลประทาน พลตำรวจเอก จำลอง เอี่ยมแจ้งพันธุ์ ผู้ช่วยอธิบดีกรมตำรวจ และนายจริย์ ตุลยานนท์ อดีตอธิบดีกรมชลประทานและกรรมการมูลนิธิชัยพัฒนา ให้หน่วยราชการที่เกี่ยวข้องร่วมกันเร่งศึกษาพิจารณาวางโครงการและดำเนินการปรับปรุงขุดลอก พร้อมก่อสร้างอาคารประกอบในคลองลัดโพธิ์ตามความเหมาะสม เมื่อวันที่ 7 พฤศจิกายน 2538
พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวได้มีพระราชดำริเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับพลังงานน้ำอันมหาศาลที่ระบายผ่านประตูระบายน้ำนี้ และความเป็นไปได้ในการนำไปใช้ประโยชน์ เมื่อวันที่ 17 พฤศจิกายน 2549
เป็นที่มาของการจัดสร้างกังหันพลังน้ำและมีพระราชดำริให้ศึกษาการใช้พลังงานน้ำที่ระบายผ่านคลองให้เกิดประโยชน์ กรมชลประทาน และมหาวิทยาลัยเกษตรศาสตร์ จึงร่วมกันประดิษฐ์เครื่องกำเนิดไฟฟ้าพลังงานจลน์ และชุดสำเร็จของเครื่องกำเนิดไฟฟ้าพลังงานจลน์ขึ้น รวมทั้งยื่นขอจดสิทธิบัตรงานทั้ง 2 ชิ้น ในพระปรมาภิไธย
สมเด็จพระนางเจ้าฯ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ทรงเคยมีพระราชดำรัสตอนหนึ่งเกี่ยวกับคลองลัดโพธิ์ว่า พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว มีพระราชดำริเริ่มโครงการเพื่อช่วยเหลือประชาชนไว้เป็นจำนวนมากทุกภาค เมื่อครั้งที่ยังไม่ได้สร้างเขื่อนป่าสักชลสิทธิ์ กรุงเทพฯ และปริมณฑล ต้องประสบปัญหาน้ำท่วม เนื่องจากน้ำเหนือหลาก พร้อมกับน้ำทะเลหนุนอยู่เสมอ จนกระทั่งหลายหน่วยงานได้ร่วมกันวางโครงการขุดลอกคลองลัดโพธิ์ เพื่อบรรเทาปัญหาน้ำท่วมกรุงเทพฯ และปริมณฑล
สะพานภูมิพล 1 และสะพานภูมิพล 2 ซึ่งอยู่ในบริเวณคลองลัดโพธิ์ เป็นโครงการอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้ก่อสร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2538 เพื่อเป็นโครงข่ายถนนรองรับการขนถ่ายลำเลียงสินค้าจากท่าเรือกรุงเทพต่อเนื่องไปจนถึงพื้นที่อุตสาหกรรมใน จ.สมุทรปราการ และภูมิภาคอื่น เพื่อไม่ให้รถบรรทุกวิ่งเข้าไปในตัวเมืองหรือทิศทางอื่น อันเป็นสาเหตุของการจราจรติดขัดโดยรอบ และทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานชื่อสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยาทั้ง 2 จุด โดยด้านทิศเหนือเชื่อมกรุงเทพฯกับสมุทรปราการว่า “สะพานภูมิพล 1” ส่วนด้านทิศใต้เชื่อมพระประแดงกับตำบลสำโรงใต้ พระราชทานชื่อว่า “สะพานภูมิพล 2” เมื่อวันที่ 2 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2552
