การเรียนรู้ทางสังคมจึงเป็นกระบวนการเผยแพร่ความรู้ ความคิด พฤติกรรม หรือแม้แต่วัตถุ สิ่งของ เทคนิควิธีการ เครื่องมือ และเทคโนโลยีต่าง ๆ ในสังคมที่มีระบบสังคมเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญในการกำหนดกระบวนการเรียนรู้ทางสังคม การถ่ายทอดวัฒนธรรม ความรู้ ความคิด และมีการใช้สื่อรวมทั้งกระบวนการสื่อสารในสังคม โดยเฉพาะในปัจจุบันมีเทคโนโลยีสารสนเทศสำหรับการสร้างให้เกิดเครือข่ายทางสังคมออนไลน์ การสร้างเครือข่ายที่มีปฏิสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบุคคลจึงเกิดขึ้นได้ง่าย มีการเรียนรู้ทางสังคมเกิดขึ้นอย่างรวดเร็ว โดยมีกระบวนการของการเรียนรู้แยกย่อย ๆ ได้เป็น 4 กระบวนการดังนี้

3. ตัดสินใจเลือกทางเลือก (Select Appropriate Alternative) เป็นขั้นตอนการตัดสินใจว่า ทางเลือกต่างๆ ที่สามารถแก้ไขปัญหาได้นั้น ทางเลือกใด มีความเหมาะสมหรือมีความเป็นไปได้มากที่สุด สำหรับสภาพการณ์ที่เป็นอยู่ในชุมชน ซึ่งจะใช้กระบวนการคิดเป็นและกระบวนการอื่นๆ เข้ามาเป็นแนวทางในการตัดสินใจ
4. เรียนรู้และลงมือปฏิบัติตามทางเลือก (Learning and Implementing) ซึ่งมีขั้นตอนย่อยๆ คือ การวางแผนการดำเนินงาน เป็นการดำเนินแนวทางการดำเนินงานตามทางที่เลือกที่กำหนดว่าจะต้องทำอย่างไร มีขั้นตอนอย่างไร ใครเป็นผู้กระทำ และดำเนินการตามแผนที่กำหนดไว้ ซึ่งในขณะปฏิบัติงานก็จะได้เรียนรู้วิธีการปฏิบัติและผลที่เกิดขึ้นแต่ละขั้นตอนที่จะทำให้ผู้ปฏิบัติเกิดการเรียนรู้และเกิดทักษะในการปฏิบัติ
5. การปรับปรุง (Improvement) ในระหว่างการดำเนินงานอาจเกิดปัญหาขึ้นได้ จะต้องมีการปรับปรุงและกระบวนการทำงานให้สามารถดำเนินการไปเพื่อให้บรรลุเป้าหมายที่ต้องการ
