ชื่อเมืองบุรีรัมย์ไม่ปรากฏในเอกสารประวัติศาสตร์สมัยอยุธยา และธนบุรีเฉพาะชื่อเมืองอื่น ซึ่งปัจจุบันเป็นอำเภอในจังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ ได้แก่ เมืองนางรอง เมืองพุทไธสง และเมืองประโคนชัย

พ.ศ. ๒๔๕๐ กระทรวงมหาดไทยปรับปรุงหัวเมืองในภาคตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือให้มณฑลนครราชสีมาประกอบด้วย ๓ เมือง ๑๗ อำเภอคือเมืองนครราชสีมา ๑๐ อำเภอ เมืองชัยภูมิ ๓ อำเภอ และเมืองบุรีรัมย์ ๔ อำเภอ คือ นางรอง พุทไธสง ประโคนชัย และรัตนบุรี ต่อมาได้มีการตราพระราชบัญญัติระเบียบบริหารแห่งราชอาณาจักรสยาม พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๖ ขึ้น ยุบมณฑลนครราชสีมาจัดระเบียบบริหารราชการส่วนภูมิภาคออกเป็นจังหวัด และอำเภอเมืองบุรีรัมย์จึงมีฐานะเป็น" จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ " ตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา
