ประวัติการปกครอง

นราธิวาสเดิมชื่อ “มะนาลอ” เป็นหมู่บ้านขึ้นอยู่กับเมืองสายบุรี ต่อมาได้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลงโอนไปขึ้นอยู่กับเมืองระแงะ ซึ่งเป็นเมืองหนึ่งในการปกครอง 7 หัวเมือง โดยมีประวัติศาสตร์ของจังหวัดนราธิวาส ดังนี้
ในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช (พ.ศ. 2325-2353) ได้แบ่งเขตการปกครองบริเวณชายแดนภาคใต้ ออกเป็น 7 หัวเมือง คือ เมืองปัตตานี เมืองหนองจิก เมืองยะลา เมืองรามัน เมืองระแงะ เมืองสายบุรี และเมืองยะหริ่ง โดยมีเจ้าเมืองเป็นผู้ปกครอง ในปี พ.ศ.2444  (ร.ศ.120)      รัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้เปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองมาเป็นแบบมณฑลเทศาภิบาล และให้หัวเมืองทั้ง 7 หัวเมือง อยู่ในความปกครองของเทศาภิบาล  เมื่อปี  2449 (ร.ศ. 125) พระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้โปรดเกล้าฯ  ให้ยุบหัวเมืองทั้ง 7 เหลือแค่เพียง 4 หัวเมือง และให้ขึ้น อยู่กับมณฑลปัตตานีที่ตั้งและอาณาเขต
           จังหวัดนราธิวาส เป็นจังหวัดชายแดน ตั้งอยู่บนฝั่งทะเลด้านตะวันออกของแหลมมลายู ห่างจากกรุงเทพมหานคร โดยทางรถยนต์1,149 กิโลเมตรและทางรถไฟ1,116 กิโลเมตร

ทิศตะวันออก       จดประเทศมาเลเซีย
ทิศใต้                  จดอ่าวไทย และประเทศมาเลเซีย

ภูมิประเทศ
          พื้นที่ของจังหวัดนราธิวาสเป็นป่าและภูเขาประมาณ 2/3 ของพื้นที่ทั้งหมด มีภูเขาหนาแน่นแถบทิศตะวันตกเฉียงใต้จดเทือกเขาสันกาลาคีรี ซึ่งเป็นแนวกั้นพรมแดนไทย-มาเลเซีย ลักษณะของพื้นที่ มีความลาดเอียงจากทิศตะวันตกไปสู่ทิศตะวันออก พื้นที่ราบส่วนใหญ่อยู่บริเวณติดกับอ่าวไทยและเป็นที่ราบลุ่มบริเวณแม่น้ำ 4 สาย คือ แม่น้ำสายบุรี แม่น้ำบางนรา แม่น้ำตากใบ และปลายแม่น้ำโก-ลก มีพื้นที่เป็นพรุ จำนวนประมาณ361,860 ไร่

ภูมิอากาศ
           ลักษณะอากาศเป็นแบบมรสุมเขตร้อน แบ่งฤดูกาลออกเป็น 2 ฤดู ได้แก่
(1) ฤดูฝน แบ่งเป็น 2 ช่วง ได้แก่ ช่วงที่รับลมมรสุมตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ ซึ่งพัดเอาความชื้นจากทะเลอันดามัน และมหาสมุทรอินเดียเข้ามา ทำให้มีฝนตกชุกในเดือนพฤษภาคมถึงเดือนตุลาคม     อีกช่วงหนึ่ง คือช่วงที่รับลมมรสุมตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือ ซึ่งพัดเอาความชื้นจากอ่าวไทยเข้ามา ทำให้มีฝนตกชุกในเดือนพฤศจิกายน ถึงเดือนมกราคม
(2) ฤดูร้อน อยู่ระหว่างเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ถึงเดือนเมษายน เนื่องจากได้รับลมตะวันออก  เฉียงใต้ ซึ่งเป็นลมร้อนที่พัดมาจากทะเลจีนใต้ ทำให้อากาศโดยทั่วไปร้อนและชื้น
