มีชาวจีนอพยพโดยอาศัยเดินเรือมาทางทะเลสาบสงขลาเข้ามาอาศัยอยู่กับคนไทย จึงทำให้การเรียกชื่อหมู่บ้านเพี้ยนไปจากบางเกาะกลมเป็นบางกล่ำ แยกมาจากอำเภอหาดใหญ่ ต่อมายกฐานะเป็นอำเภอเมื่อวันที่ 8 ก.ย. 2538
