พระบรมธาตุนครศรีธรรมราช
ตามตำนานกล่าวว่า พระบรมสารีริกธาตุเสด็จมาสู่หาดทรายแก้ว โดยนางเหมชาลาฒ และพระธนกุมาร เมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ.๘๓๔ จึงได้สร้างพระบรมธาตุ เพื่อบรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ผู้ปกครองเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช จะก่อสร้างตกแต่งเพิ่มเติมอยู่เสมอ เพื่อสร้างสมความเลื่อมใสศรัทธาของประชาชน ที่มีต่อองค์พระบรมธาตุเช่น สมัยศรีวิชัยได้สร้างเป็นเจดีย์ทรงศรีวิชัย ต่อมาในรัชสมัยพระเจ้าจันทรภาณุ เมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ.๑๗๙๐ ได้ทรงสร้างเป็นเจดีย์ทรงลังกาครอบองค์เจดีย์เดิมแบบศรีวิชัยไว้ภายใน

พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ ประดิษฐานอยู่ภายในวัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร เป็นปูชนียสถานอันเป็นที่เคารพสักการะอย่างสูงสุดของชาวนครศรีธรรมราช และชาวใต้ทั้งปวง ไม่ปรากฎหลักฐานที่แน่นอนเกี่ยวกับประวัติการสร้างตามตำนานกล่าวว่า พระเจดีย์องค์เดิมสร้างตามความเชื่อของพุทธศาสนาฝ่ายมหายาน เมื่อประมาณปี พ.ศ.๑๓๐๐ สมัยอาณาจักรตามพรลิงค์ ลักษณะเป็นสถาปัตยกรรมแบบศรีวิชัย ต่อมาเมื่อได้มีการติดต่อสัมพันธ์กับพระภิกษุลังกา โดยเฉพาะในสมัยพระเจ้าจันทรภาณุศรีธรรมราช ได้นิมนต์พระภิกษุลังกามาตั้งคณะสงฆ์ในเมืองนครศรีธรรมราชเป็นการสถาปนาพระพุทธศาสนาลัทธิลังกาวงศ์ ในระยะนั้นพระบรมธาตุองค์เดิมชำรุดทรุดโทรมมาก พระภิกษุลังกาจึงได้ช่วยกันบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์ให้เป็นสถาปัตยกรรมแบบลังกา โดยสร้างพระสถูปแบบลังกาครอบองค์พระเจดีย์เดิม เป็นพระสถูปทรงโอคว่ำปากระฆังติดกับพื้นกำแพงแก้ว ที่มุมกำแพงแก้วมีพระบรมธาตุจำลองประดิษฐานอยู่ทั้งสี่มุม
