เนื่องจากผู้วิจัยเป็นนิสิตภาควิชาภาษาอังกฤษชั้นปีที่สามมหาวิทยาลัยนเรศวร จึงได้ทราบว่าการเรียนภาษาแต่เพียงในห้องเรียนไม่กี่ชั่วโมงไม่อาจช่วยให้ผู้เรียนเก่งและมีความก้าวหน้าทางภาษาขึ้นมาได้ มีเพียงการเรียนรู้ด้วยตนเองนอกห้องเรียนที่จะสามารถต่อยอดความรู้จากในห้องเรียนได้ ดังนั้นผู้วิจัยจึงคิดจะทำวิจัยสำรวจกลวิธีการเรียนรู้ด้วยตนเองของนิสิตเอกภาษาอังกฤษชั้นปีที่สามที่มีผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนในระดับที่ต่างกัน เพื่อนำมาเปรียบเทียบดูว่าผู้เรียนที่มีระดับผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียนสูงส่วนมากมักใช้กลวิธีใด ทั้งนี้เพื่อนำมาเป็นแนวทางในการเรียนภาษาอังกฤษด้วยตนเองของผู้ที่อยากเก่งภาษาอังกฤษและรวมถึงตัวผู้วิจัยซึ่งมีผลการเรียนในระดับปานกลางที่จะได้พัฒนากลวิธีการเรียนด้วยตนเองให้ดียิ่งขึ้นไปอีกด้วย
