การทำบุญข้าวสาก นิยมทำในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 10 เป็นประจำทุกปี ที่เรียกว่า "บุญข้าวสาก" เนื่องจากเมื่อจัดทำข้าวปลาอาหาร และเครื่องไทยทานต่าง ๆ อุทิศให้ ผู้ล่วงลับไปแล้ว จะทำสากหรือสลาก มีคำอุทิศส่วนกุศลใส่กระดาษบันทึกชื่อ ผู้มีจิตศรัทธาบริจาค และความประสงค์ว่าจะบริจาคทานให้แก่ผู้ใด โดยบอกชื่อผู้ที่จะ มารับส่วนกุศลด้วย

บุญข้าวสากหรือสลาก เป็นการทำบุญอย่างหนึ่งของประเพณีสิบสองเดือน หรือ "ฮิตสิบสอง" (ฮีต มาจากคำว่า จารีต ฮีตสิบสอง คือ จารีตประเพณีสิบสองเดือน) ของชาวอีสาน โดยมีจุดประสงค์สำคัญ เพื่อมุ่งอุทิศส่วนกุศลให้ญาติสนิท เช่น ปู่ ย่า ตา ยาย บิดา มารดา สามี ภรรยา พี่น้องที่ถึงแก่กรรมไปแล้ว และอาจอุทิศให้ เปรตทั่วไปด้วย
