จังหวัดในภาคเหนือ แบ่งตามลักษณะทางภูมิศาสตร์ ประเพณี สังคม วัฒนธรรมและภาษา โดยราชบัณฑิตยสถานประกอบไปด้วย 9 จังหวัด ได้แก่

เชียงราย (หิรัญนครเงินยาง)
เชียงใหม่ (นพบุรีศรีนครพิงค์เชียงใหม่)
น่าน (นันทบุรีศรีนครน่าน)
พะเยา (ภูกามยาว)
แพร่ (เวียงโกศัย)
แม่ฮ่องสอน (แม่ร่องสอน,เมืองยวม)

นอกจากการแบ่งตามราชบัณฑิตยสถานแล้ว ยังมีหน่วยงานที่เคยจัดแบ่งภูมิภาคของประเทศไทยขึ้นเพื่อกำหนดแผนบริหารงานด้านเศรษฐกิจและสังคม ซึ่งเป็นการแบ่งภูมิภาคอย่างไม่เป็นทางการได้แก่ คณะกรรมการพัฒนาการเศรษฐกิจและสังคมแห่งชาติ โดยกำหนดให้ภาคเหนือประกอบด้วย 17 จังหวัดได้แก่
