พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงตระหนักดีว่าการศึกษาของเยาวชนนั้นเป็นพื้นฐานอันสำคัญของประเทศชาติ ดังพระราชดำรัสที่ว่า "การศึกษาเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญในการสร้างและพัฒนาความรู้ ความคิด ความประพฤติ และคุณธรรมของบุคคล หากสังคมและบ้านเมืองใดให้การศึกษาที่ดีแก่เยาวชนได้อย่างครบถ้วนในทุกๆ ด้านแล้ว สังคมและบ้านเมืองนั้นก็จะมีพลเมืองที่มีคุณภาพ สามารถดำรงรักษาความเจริญมั่นคงของประเทศชาติไว้ และพัฒนาก้าวหน้าต่อไปโดยตลอด "

พระองค์จึงทรงมีพระราชดำริริเริ่มโครงการต่างๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการศึกษา ดังนี้

พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงทราบดีว่าเด็กและเยาวชนของไทยมิได้ขาดสติปัญญา หากแต่ด้อยโอกาสและขาดทุนทรัพย์สำหรับการศึกษา จึงทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมพระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์เพื่อก่อตั้งกองทุนการศึกษาหลายขั้นหลายทุน ตั้งแต่ระดับประถมศึกษา มัธยมศึกษา และอุดมศึกษา ดังนี้

พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าโปรดกระหม่อมพระราชทานพระราชทรัพย์ส่วนพระองค์จัดตั้งมูลนิธิอานันทมหิดลขึ้น เมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๐๒ โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อพระราชทานทุนมูลนิธิอานันทมหิดล แก่นิสิตนักศึกษาที่มีผลการเรียนดีเด่นในด้านต่างๆ ให้นิสิตนักศึกษาเหล่านั้นได้มีโอกาสไปศึกษาหาความรู้วิชาการชั้นสูงในต่างประเทศ และนำความรู้นั้นกลับมาใช้พัฒนาชาติบ้านเมืองให้เจริญก้าวหน้าต่อไป

โครงการสารานุกรมไทยสำหรับเยาวชนเริ่มดำเนินงานเมื่อปี พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๑ โดยคณะกรรมการผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิในสาขาวิชาต่างๆ เพื่อเป็นการสนองพระราชดำริของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวที่ว่า

"หนังสือประเภทสารานุกรมนั้น บรรจุสรรพวิชาการอันเป็นสาระไว้ครบทุกแขนง เมื่อมีความต้องการหรือพอใจจะเรียนรู้เรื่องใด ก็สามารถค้นหาอ่านทราบโดยสะดวก นับว่าเป็นหนังสือที่มีประโยชน์เกื้อกูลการศึกษาเพิ่มพูนปัญญาด้วยตนเองของประชาชนอย่างสำคัญ โดยเฉพาะในยามที่มีปัญหาการขาดแคลนครูและที่เล่าเรียนเช่นขณะนี้ หนังสือสารานุกรมจะช่วยคลี่คลายให้บรรเทาเบาบางลงได้เป็นอย่างดี"

ปัจจุบันโครงการฯ ได้จัดทำหนังสือสารานุกรมไทยที่บรรจุความรู้ใน ๗ สาขาวิชา คือ วิทยาศาสตร์ เทคโนโลยี สังคมศาสตร์ มนุษยศาสตร์ เกษตรศาสตร์ แพทย์ศาสตร์ และคณิตศาสตร์ ขณะนี้มีออกมาแล้ว ๒๘ เล่ม โดยแต่ละเล่มได้จัดแบ่งเนื้อหาของแต่ละเรื่องออกเป็นสามระดับ เพื่อที่จะให้เยาวชนสามารถศึกษาค้นคว้าหาความรู้ได้ตามพื้นฐานของตน

พิธีพระราชทานปริญญาบัตรแก่ผู้สำเร็จการศึกษา
