ประวัติความเป็นมา ในวาระครบรอบ 100 ปี การพิพิธภัณฑ์ไทย (พ.ศ.2517) กรมศิลปากรได้ริเริ่มโครงการจัดตั้งพิพิธภัณฑสถาน
ประเภทศิลปะสมัยใหม่ จึงได้เสนอขอใช้โรงกษาปณ์สิทธิการ เพื่อปรับปรุงให้เป็นหอศิลป ซึ่งกรมธนารักษ์ได้อนุมัติ
มอบอาคารแห่งนี้ให้กรมศิลปากร เมื่อวันที่ 19 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2517 เพื่อจัดตั้งเป็น “หอศิลปแห่งชาติ” โดยมีวัตถุประสงค์
หลัก เพื่อเป็นสถานที่เก็บรวบรวมและจัดแสดงผลงานศิลปกรรมประเภททัศนศิลป์ของศิลปินผู้มีชื่อเสียงทั้งชาวไทยและชาวต่างประเทศ ตลอดจนเป็นศูนย์ศึกษาวิจัยและเผยแพร่ความรู้เกี่ยวกับศิลปกรรมทั้งแบบไทยประเพณีและร่วมสมัย
พิธีเปิดหอศิลปแห่งชาติอย่างเป็นทางการมีขึ้นในวันที่ 8 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2520 โดยสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ
สยามบรมราชกุมารี เมื่อครั้งดำรงพระยศสมเด็จพระเจ้าลูกเธอเจ้าฟ้าสิรินธรเทพรัตนสุดาฯ เสด็จเป็นองค์ประธานในพิธีเปิด

ต่อมาเมื่อวันที่ 15 กันยายน พ.ศ.2526 กรมธนารักษ์ได้มอบอาคารและที่ดินบางส่วนให้พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลป ทำให้มีพื้นที่เพิ่มมากขึ้นทั้งสามารถดำเนินการปรับปรุงขยายพื้นที่อาคารจัดแสดง เพิ่มขีดความสามารถในการให้บริการแก่ศิลปินตลอดจนอำนวยความสะดวกแก่ประชาชนผู้เข้าชมได้อย่างครบถ้วนตามหน้าที่ของพิพิธภัณฑ์ทางศิลปะระดับชาติดังที่เป็นอยู่ในปัจจุบัน
ภายในหอศิลป์มีการจัดรูปภาพต่างๆนาๆ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นของชาวต่างชาติและชาวไทย แต่ละรูปภาพจะสื่อความหมายต่างกันอออกไป ภาพส่วนใหญ่เน้นสีสันสวยงามมีลวดลายต่างๆ และภายในยังได้เห็นเกวียนขนาดใหญ่ หรือเรียกอีกชื่อว่ายานพาหนะ เป็นยานพาหนะใช้บรรทุกข้าว สิ่งของไปจำหน่ายที่ตลาดหรือขนย้ายสิ่งของ หรือใช้เป็นยานพาหนะโดยสารเดินทางในสมัยโบราณที่ยังไม่มีรถยนต์ รถไฟ เหมือนปัจจุบัน เป้าหมายของหอศิลป์จำปาศรีอนุรักษ์ ศิลปวัตถุด้านทัศนศิลป์อันเป็นมรดกทางวัฒนธรรม เพื่อให้ธำรงความเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของชาติสืบต่อไป เผยแพร่ความรู้ทางวิชาการในงานด้านทัศนศิลป์สู่สาธารณชน โดยพัฒนารูปแบบการเผยแพร่งานวิชาการให้ทันสมัยเหมาะสมกับกลุ่มเป้าหมายและสภาวะสังคมปัจจุบัน
ต่อมายังพัฒนาและเพิ่มศักยภาพให้พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลป เป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ที่ได้ มาตรฐานในระดับสากล โดยการพัฒนาระบบการบริหารจัดการพิพิธภัณฑ์และพัฒนาบุคลากรไปพร้อมๆกันอย่างต่อเนื่อง พร้อมยังประชาสัมพันธ์กิจกรรมในทุกๆด้านของพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลป กับสื่อมวลชน ทุกรูปแบบเพื่อให้ประชาชนทุกกลุ่มเป้าหมายสามารถเข้าถึงได้ง่าย และพัฒนาการประชาสัมพันธ์ให้มีรูปแบบที่ดึงดูดและน่าสนใจเหมาะสมกับสภาวะแวดล้อมปัจจุบัน
