เนื่องในวโรกาสมหามงคล เฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา 85 พรรษา 5 ธ.ค.2555
สถาบันการแพทย์ฉุกเฉินแห่งชาติ ได้รวบรวมพระราชกรณียกิจ ที่พระองค์ทรงเป็นมหากษัตริย์ผู้ให้ เพื่อพสกนิกรชาวไทย โดยเฉพาะด้านการแพทย์และสาธารณสุข


“…ถ้าคนเรามีสุขภาพเสื่อมโทรม ก็จะไม่สามารถพัฒนาชาติได้ เพราะทรัพยากรที่สำคัญของประเทศชาติ ก็คือพลเมืองนั่นเอง…” พระราชดำรัสของพระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวที่แสดงให้เห็นถึงความห่วงใย และเอื้ออาทรต่อทุกข์สุขของพสกนิกร โดยเฉพาะในด้านสุขภาพอนามัย ที่พระองค์ทรงให้ความสำคัญมาก ดังจะเห็นว่าโครงการที่พระราชทานให้กับประชาชนในระยะแรกๆ ล้วนแต่เป็นโครงการพัฒนาสุขภาพอนามัยให้แก่ประชาชน และเห็นว่าประชาชนมีร่างกายที่สมบูรณ์แข็งแรงจะนำไปสู่สุขภาพจิตที่ดี และส่งผลให้การพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจและสังคมดีตามไปด้วย ดังพระราชดำรัสตอนหนึ่งว่า

สำหรับโครงการในพระราชดำริด้านการแพทย์และสาธารณสุข อาทิ

โครงการหน่วยแพทย์พระราชทาน
ทรงพระกรุณาโปรดเกล้าฯ ให้แพทย์ประจำพระองค์ที่ตามเสด็จฯ ตรวจและรักษาคนไข้ ตั้งแต่วันที่ 29 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2512 เมื่อเสด็จ พระราชดำเนินทอดพระเนตรโครงการชาวเขา และทรงพบว่าราษฎรที่มารอรับเสด็จป่วยเป็นไข้กันมาก
โครงการดังกล่าว ประกอบด้วยการบำบัดรักษาจากคณะแพทย์พระราชทาน และอบรมหมอหมู่บ้าน เป็นการช่วยแก้ไขปัญหาด้านสุข ภาพอนามัยของราษฎร ที่อยู่ในพื้นที่ห่างไกล และมีอุปสรรคที่ ระบบปกติยากจะดูแลได้ทั่วถึง โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง ราษฎรส่วนใหญ่ มีฐานะยากจน และขาดความรู้ในการดูแลรักษาตนเอง การมีคณะแพทย์ พระราชทานออกไปบำบัดรักษา ผู้ป่วยจะทำให้ราษฎรมีโอกาสได้รับ การรักษาอย่างถูกต้อง โดยไม่ต้องเสียทุนทรัพย์ใดๆ และสำหรับการ อบรมหมอหมู่บ้านนั้น จะช่วยให้ราษฎรมีความรู้เกี่ยวกับการป้อง กัน รู้จักวิธีรักษาพยาบาลแบบปัจจุบัน และรู้จักวิธีติดต่อกับ หน่วยราชการ ในกรณีที่เกินขีด ความสามารถที่จะดูแลรักษาตน เองได้อันเป็นการช่วยแก้ปัญหาในระยะยาว ซึ่งอาจกล่าวสรุปได้ว่า โครงการหน่วยแพทย์พระราชทาน จะแก้ไขปัญหา ในด้านต่างๆ ดังนี้
1. ทางด้านสุขภาพอนามัย ซึ่งเป็นผลที่ได้รับโดยตรง จะช่วยแก้ ปัญหาการเจ็บป่วย หรือทุพพลภาพได้ปีหนึ่งๆ เป็นจำนวนมาก จำนวน ราษฎรทั้งหมดหรือเกือบ ทั้งหมด ที่ได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณในการ บำบัดรักษาจากหน่วยแพทย์เคลื่อนที่พระราชทาน จะเป็นชาวชนบทที่ยากจน ที่มีอาชีพเป็นเกษตรกร อันเป็นประชาชนส่วนใหญ่ของประเทศ จากจำนวนตัว เลขที่ปรากฎในแต่ละปี จะมีราษฎรที่เจ็บป่วยจากทุกภาคที่ได้รับ พระมหากรุณาธิคุณรับไว้เป็นคนไข้ในพระบรมราชานุเคราะห์ ทั้งที่เป็นคนไข้ ในโรงพยาบาลและผู้ที่มาขอรับการตรวจ ตลอดจนถึงการ ที่หน่วยแพทย์เคลื่อนที่ตามเสด็จฯ ไปตามหมู่บ้านต่างๆ มีจำนวนมาก มายนับหมื่นนับแสนคน
2. ทางด้านเศรษฐกิจ การที่ราษฎรเจ็บป่วยจะเป็นปัญหาในการประกอบอาชีพของราษฎร ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นเกษตรกร ที่จะต้องใช้กำลังภายในการทำงาน ดังนั้น เมื่อได้รับการบำบัดรักษาให้มีสุขภาพพลามัย ที่ดีแล้วราษฎรเหล่านั้นก็สามารถมีร่างกายที่สามารถต่อ สู้กับงานหนักในการประกอบอาชีพได้ ซึ่งจะได้ยังผลให้ เศรษฐกิจส่วนรวมของสังคมดีขึ้นอย่างแน่นอน
