พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ขอนแก่น
พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ ตั้งอยู่ที่ถนนหลังศูนย์ราชการ ตำบลในเมือง จัดแสดงเรื่องราวท้องถิ่นอีสานเหนือ ในทางด้านภูมิศาสตร์ ประวัติศาสตร์ โบราณคดี วัฒนธรรมพื้นบ้านและชาติพันธุ์วิทยา

เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์ที่มีโบราณวัตถุล้ำค่าของภาคอีสานตอนบนหลายสมัย เช่น สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ สมัยทวารวดี หรือข้าวของเครื่องใช้จากภูมิปัญญาท้องถิ่นอีสาน ฯลฯ ทั้งหมดจัดแสดงโดยแบ่งเป็นยุคสมัยต่าง ๆ อย่างเป็นระบบ ในอาคารทรงไทยประยุกต์สองชั้น ซึ่งเชื่อมต่อกับอาคารจัดแสดงใบเสมากลางแจ้งและอาคารชั้นเดียว ด้านหลัง สิ่งน่าสนใจ ได้แก่

ภาชนะดินเผา สมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ อายุประมาณ 5,600 - 4,500 ปีมาแล้ว ทำจากดินเผา สูง 21 ซม. เส้นผ่าศูนย์กลางปากภาชนะ 26.5 ซม. เลขทะเบียน 121/2516 แหล่งโบราณคดีบ้านธาตุ ต. บ้านธาตุ อ. เพ็ญ จ. อุดรธานี

พระศิวะ หรือ ทวารบาล (นนทิเกศวร) ศิลปะลพบุรี แบบนครวัด พุทธศตวรรษที่ 17 ทำจากหินทราย สูง 175 ซม. เลขทะเบียน 444/2516 พบจากการขุดแต่งกู่น้อย อ. นาดูน จ. มหาสารคาม
พระวิษณุ (พระนารายณ์) ศิลปะลพบุรี แบบบาปวน ปลายพุทธศตวรรษที่ 16 ทำจากหินทราย สูง 61 ซม. เลขทะเบียน 332/2516 พบจากการขุดแต่งกู่น้อย อ. นาดูน จ. มหาสารคาม
แผ่นเงินดุน ศิลปะทวารวดี ราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 15 - 16 ขนาดประมาณ 10x5 ซม. เลขทะเบียน 434/2516 พบที่โบราณสถานอุ่นญาดู เมืองกันทรวิชัย อ. กันทรวิชัย จ. มหาสารคาม ศิลาจารึกศาลานางขาว อักษรขอม ภาษาเขมร อายุประมาณพุทธศตวรรษที่ 16 - 17 ทำจากหินทราย สูง 21 ซม. กว้าง 9 ซม. เลขทะเบียน 364/2516 พบจากการขุดแต่งโบราณสถานศาลานางขาว อ. นาดูน จ. มหาสารคาม ศิลาจารึกกู่แก้ว (อโรคยศาล) อักษรขอม ภาษาสันสกฤต พุทธศตวรรษที่ 18 ทำจากหินทราย สูง 38 ซม. กว้าง 22.5 - 24.5 ซม. เลขทะเบียน 4/2530 พบจากการขุดแต่งกู่แก้ว อ. เมือง จ. ขอนแก่น

อาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์ มีสองชั้น โดยจัดแสดงดังนี้
- ชั้นล่างด้านขวา แสดงนิทรรศการสมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ ของภาคอีสานตอนบน บอกเล่าเกี่ยวกับการเปลี่ยนแปลงของผิวโลก ตั้งแต่ 280 ล้านปีก่อน ผ่านยุคไดโนเสาร์ซึ่งมีการค้นพบฟอสซิลอายุ 160 ล้านปีที่ภูเวียง กระทั่งถึงมนุษย์ยุคก่อนประวัติศาสตร์ และจัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุที่น่าสนใจ เช่น เครื่องมือหินกะเทาะสมัยสังคม ล่าสัตว์อายุ 1 หมื่นปี ภาชนะดินเผาอายุ 5,600 ปี ขวานสำริดอายุ 4,000 ปี กำไลงาช้างอายุ 4,000 ปี เครื่องประดับทำจากเปลือกหอยทะเลอายุ 2,500 ปี ฯลฯ
- ชั้นล่างด้านซ้าย จัดแสดงใบเสมาและชิ้นส่วนศิลปกรรมสมัยทวารวดี เช่น ใบเสมาหินทรายกว้าง 68 ซม. สูง 190 ซม. สลักภาพพุทธประวัติตอนพิมพาพิลาป อายุราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 15 พบที่เมืองฟ้าแดดสูงยาง จ. กาฬสินธุ์ และใบเสมาหินทรายสลักลายสวยงามอีกหลายชิ้น
- ชั้นบน เป็นห้องโถงโหญ่จัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุชิ้นสำคัญมาก มาย เช่น พระพุทธรูปสมัยต่าง ๆ ของไทยและลาว พระพิมพ์ปางแสดงธรรมสมัยทวารวดี พระแผ่นเงินดุนสมัยทวารวดี พระพุทธรูปนาคปรกศิลปะลพบุรี ฯลฯ

อาคารจัดแสดงใบเสมากลางแจ้ง กลางแจ้ง อยู่ด้านตะวันตกของ อาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์ เป็นอาคารโล่งไม่มีผนัง จัดแสดงใบเสมาหิน ทรายแกะสลักลวดลายสวยงามมากมาย บริเวณสนามหญ้าภาย นอกอาคารมีใบเสมาโบราณตั้งกระจายอยู่ทั่ว เป็นใบเสมาที่พบในเมืองฟ้าแดดสูงยาง จ. กาฬสินธุ์ และแถบอีสานตอนบน

- ห้องด้านซ้าย จัดแสดงโบราณวัตถุและเครื่องใช้ของบุคคล สำคัญคู่เมืองขอนแก่น เช่น ง้าวโบราณของอดีตเจ้าเมือง ตู้พระธรรมลายรดน้ำและธรรมาสน์ทรงปราสาทแกะสลักลงรักปิดทองศิลปะพื้นบ้านอันสวยงาม เป็นต้น
- ห้องด้านขวา จัดแสดงวัฒนธรรมพื้นบ้านอีสาน มีเรือนอีสานจำลองแสดงวิถีชีวิตความเป็นอยู่ของชาวอีสานดั้งเดิม ลานบ้านมีเกวียน ใต้ถุนบ้านมีเครื่องมือเกษตร เครื่องมือจับปลา เครื่องจักสาน มีแคร่สำหรับนั่งทอผ้า บนเรือนมีเครื่องเรือนเครื่องใช้แบบพื้นบ้านจัดไว้อย่างน่าชม
