วัดภูมินทร์ อยู่ใกล้พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติน่านเป็นวัดที่มีลักษณะแปลกกว่าวัดอื่น ๆ คือ โบสถ์และวิหาร สร้างเป็นอาคารหลังเดียวกัน ประตูไม้ทั่งสี่ทิศ แกะสลักลวดลายงดงามโดยฝีมือช่างเมืองน่าน นอกจากนี้ฝาผนังแสดงถึงชีวิตและวัฒนธรรมของยุดสมัยที่ผ่านมาความสวยแปลกของวัดภูมินทร์ คือ เป็นพระอุโบสถและพระวิหารสร้างเป็นอาคารหลังเดียวกัน เป็นทรงจัตุรมุข (กรมศิลปากร ได้สันนิษฐานว่าเป็นอุโบสถจัตุรมุขหลังแรกของประเทศไทย) นาคสะดุ้งขนาดใหญ่ แห่แหนพระอุโบสถเทินไว้บนกลางลำตัว ตรงใจกลางพระอุโบสถประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปปางมารวิชัยขนาดใหญ่สี่องค์ ประทับนั่งบนฐานชุกชี หันพระพักตร์ออกด้านประตู ทั้งสี่ทิศ เบื้องพระปฤษฎางค์ชนกัน ภายในพระอุโบสถ มีภาพจิตรกรรมฝาผนังศิลปกรรมไทลื้อ ที่เล่าเรื่องชาดก ตำนานพื้นบ้าน และความเป็นอยู่ของชาวน่านในอดีต

ประวัติของวัด
ตามพงศาวดารเมืองน่าน วัดภูมินทร์สร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2139 โดยพระเจ้าเจตบุตรพรหมมินทร์ หลังจากที่พระองค์ทรงครองนครน่านได้ 6 ปี มีปรากฏในคัมภีร์เมืองเหนือว่า เดิมชื่อ “วัดพรหมมินทร์” ซึ่งเป็นชื่อของเจ้าเจตบุตรพรหมมินทร์ ผู้สร้างแต่ตอนหลังชื่อวัดได้เพี้ยนไปจากเดิมเป็นวัดภูมินทร์ วัดแห่งนี้ได้รับการบูรณะครั้งใหญ่เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2410 หลังจากที่สร้างมา 271 ปี โดยเจ้าอนันตวรฤทธิเดช เจ้าผู้ครองนครน่าน โปรดให้ซ่อมแซมครั้งใหญ่แล้วเสร็จเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2418 (ปลายสมัยรัชกาลที่ 4) ใช้เวลาซ่อมนานถึง 7 ปี จิตรกรรมฝาผนังในวิหารหลวงก็เขียนขึ้นในช่วงนี้ ภาพจิตรกรรมหรือ “ฮูบแต้ม” ในวัดภูมินทร์เป็นชาดกในพุทธศาสนาแต่ถ้าพิจารณารายละเอียดของวิถีชีวิตของคนเมืองในสมัยนั้น

สิ่งน่าสนใจ
วิหารจัตุรมุข เป็นงานสถาปัตยกรรมล้านนาแบบพิเศษ ที่มีความงดงามอยู่อย่างลงตัว โดยนำโบสถ์และวิหารมาสร้างรวมเข้าเป็นอาคารเดียวกัน รูปจัตุรมุข มีบันได และประตูออกทั้งสี่ทิศ ที่ราวบันไดเป็นปูนปั้นรูปพญานาค หันเศียรนาคขึ้นสู่เบื้องบน ภายในวิหารมีพระพุทธรูปปูนปั้นปางมารวิชัยขนาดใหญ่สี่องค์ หันพระปฤษฎางค์ (หลัง) ชนกัน บ่ายพระพักตร์สู่ประตูทางเข้าทั้งสี่ทิศ เบื้องหลังพระปฤษฎางค์เป็นฐานเจดีย์สี่เหลี่ยมย่อมุมสิบสอง

จิตรกรรมฝาผนัง ภาพวาดปรากฏอยู่บนผนังด้านในวิหารจัตุรมุขทั้งสี่ด้าน ผนังด้านทิศเหนือ ตะวันออก และใต้ เป็นภาพพระพุทธเจ้าประทับนั่งปางมารวิชัย มีพระสาวกนั่งข้างละสององค์ สันนิษฐานว่าคงเป็นตอนที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงธรรมเทศนา และต่ำลงมาได้เขียนเป็นภาพขนาดเล็กเล่าเรื่อง “คันธกุมารชาดก”ต่อเนื่องกันตลอดทั้งสามด้าน ส่วนผนังด้านทิศตะวันตก ตอนบนเป็นภาพพระพุทธเจ้าเสด็จปรินิพพานในปางไสยาสน์ มีพระสาวกแสดงอาการเศร้าโศกอยู่สี่องค์ ตอนล่างลงมาเป็นภาพเล่าเรื่อง “พระเตมีราชชาดก” นอกจากนี้ยังมีภาพจิตรกรรมซึ่งโดดเด่นเป็นพิเศษคือ ภาพเหมือนบุคคลและภาพวิถีชีวิตชาวน่านในอดีต ที่น่าสนใจ ได้แก่

1. ภาพบริเวณยอดเสาซ้ายมือของประตูด้านทิศตะวันออก นักวิชาการสันนิษฐานว่าน่าจะเป็นภาพเหมือนของเจ้าอนันตวรฤทธิเดช ผู้ปฏิสังขรณ์วัดนี้

4. ภาพบนผนังซ้ายมือของประตูด้านทิศตะวันตก เป็นรูปชายหนู่มหญิงสาวกำลังเกี้ยวพาราสีกัน ชายเปลือยอก เห็นรอยสักเต็มไปทั้งแขน ไหล่ หน้าอก พุง และหน้าขา เป็นการสักตามสมัยนิยม อันเป็นที่มาของการเรียกคนกลุ่มนี้ว่า “ลาวพุงดำ” ตำแหน่งของภาพจงใจเขียนให้อยู่ข้างหลังประตู และเขียนอยู่างประณีตมาก น่าจะเป็นภาพเหมือนของช่างวาดเอง ภาพนี้จัดเป็นภาพชิ้นเยี่ยม
