สภาวะลานีญา 
          ลานีญา (La Niña) แปลว่า บุตรธิดา เป็นปรากฏการณ์ที่มีลักษณะตรงข้ามกับเอลนีโญ คือมีลักษณะคล้ายคลึงกับสภาวะปกติแต่รุนแรงกว่า กล่าวคือ กระแสลมสินค้าตะวันออก (Trade wind) ที่พัดไปทางทิศตะวันออกมีกำลังแรงทำให้ระดับน้ำทะเลบริเวณทางซีกตะวันตกของมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกสูงกว่าสภาวะปกติ  ลมค้ายกตัวเหนือประเทศอินโดนีเซียทำให้เกิดฝนตกอย่างหนัก  แต่ที่บริเวณชายฝั่งประเทศเปรูน้ำเย็นใต้มหาสมุทรยกตัวขึ้นแทนที่กระแสน้ำอุ่นบริเวณชายฝั่งมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิกทางซีกตะวันออกดังภาพที่ 3  ทำให้เกิดธาตุอาหารและฝูงปลาชุกชุม
