พระราชวังสนามจันทร์เป็นพระราชวังที่ พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฏเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างขึ้นบนบริเวณที่คาดว่าเป็นพระราชวังเก่าของกษัตริย์สมัยโบราณที่เรียกว่า เนินปราสาท เพื่อเป็นสถานที่ประทับครั้งมานมัสการองค์พระปฐมเจดีย์และเมื่อบ้านเมืองถึงยามวิกฤต

พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวมีพระราชพินัยกรรมแสดงพระราชประสงค์ยกพระราชวังสนามจันทร์ให้เป็นสถานที่ตั้งของโรงเรียนนายร้อยทหารบก โดยมีใจความว่า
" บรรดาที่ดินตึกรามทั้งใหญ่ น้อย ที่รวมอยู่ในเขตซึ่งเรียกว่า "พระราชวังสนามจันทร์" เป็นสมบัติส่วนตัวของข้าพเจ้าโดยแท้ไม่ได้รับมฤดกมาจากสมเด็จพระบรมชนกนารถมิได้ ข้าพเจ้าได้เก็บทุนในตำแหน่งหน้าที่พระยุพราชและทุนอื่น ๆ สร้างที่สนามจันทร์ และสร้างพระที่นั่งซึ่งเรียกว่า พระพิมานประฐม นั้นขึ้นก่อน ต่อมาเมื่อข้าพเจ้าได้ราชสมบัติแล้ว ข้าพเจ้าก็ได้เอาเงินพระคลังข้างที่ทำนุบำรุงที่นี้ตลอดมาเป็นส่วนตัวทั้งสิ้น เพราะฉะนั้นจะเอาที่พระราชวังสนามจันทร์ไปรวมเข้ากับกองมฤดกใหญ่นั้นหาควรไม่ ข้าพเจ้ามีสิทธิ์ตามกฎหมายเหมือนสามัญชน ที่จะยกที่นี้ให้แก่ผู้ใดก็ได้ เพราะฉะนั้นเมื่อสิ้นตัวข้าพเจ้าไปแล้ว ข้าพเจ้าขอยกที่นี้ให้แก่รัฐบาลสยามเป็นสิทธิขาด เพื่อทำเป็นโรงเรียนนายร้อยทหารบก"[1]
กรมศิลปากรได้ประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษาให้พระราชวังสนามจันทร์ เป็นโบราณสถาน ประกาศในราชกิจจานุเบกษา เล่ม 98 ตอนที่ 177 วันที่ 27 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2524 [2]
ในปัจจุบัน พระราชวังสนามจันทร์อยู่ในความดูแลของสำนักพระราชวัง โดยเมื่อวันที่ 1 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2546 คณะกรรมการอำนวยการบูรณะพระราชวังสนามจันทร์ ซึ่งมีสมเด็จพระเจ้าภคินีเธอ เจ้าฟ้าเพชรรัตนราชสุดา สิริโสภาพัณณวดี เป็นองค์ประธาน ร่วมกับกระทรวงมหาดไทย นายนาวิน ขันธหิรัญ อดีตผู้ว่าราชการจังหวัดนครปฐม และมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร โดยผู้ช่วยศาสตราจารย์ลิขิต กาญจนาภรณ์ รองอธิการบดีมหาวิทยาลัยศิลปากร วิทยาเขตพระราชวังสนามจันทร์ได้น้อมเกล้าฯ ถวายคืนพระราชวังสนามจันทร์แก่สำนักพระราชวัง[3]
