ประวัติ / ความเป็นมา
ประเพณีการแข่งเรือพายมีมาตั้งแต่อดีตกาล ของไทยนี้สืบได้ตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ซึ่งมักจัดกันในเดือน 11 และถือเป็นพระราชพิธีประจำเดือน มูลเหตุที่ถือเอาเดือน 11 เป็นเดือนที่ต้องแข่งเรือเพราะในเดือน 11 นั้นน้ำเหนือไหลบ่าลงมา จนกระทั่งคนสมัยก่อนเอ่ยขานเป็นคำกลอนจนติดปากว่า "เดือนสิบเอ็ดน้ำนอง เดือนสิบสองน้ำทรง" ทั้งนี้เพราะเดือน 11 น้ำท่วมเต็ม พอถึงเดือน 12 น้ำจะทรงตัวและค่อยๆ ลดลงตามลำดับ แต่ในสมัยปัจจุบันย่อมขึ้นอยู่กับธรรมชาติ ปีใดที่น้ำไม่ยอมลดลงในเดือน 12 ย่อมกระทบกระเทือนถึงการเก็บเกี่ยวข้าวในนาของประชาราษฎร์ ฉะนั้น เรื่องเกี่ยวกับน้ำนี้พระมหากษัตริย์ไทยในสมัยโบราณจึงถือเป็นพระราชพิธีต้องกระทำ เรียกว่า "พิธีไล่น้ำ" (พิธีไล่น้ำเป็นพิธีของพราหมณ์กระทำในเดือน 11) ในฤดูน้ำท่วมนี้ประชาชนก็มีการแข่งเรือ ซึ่งถือเป็นกีฬาของไทยสมัยโบราณอย่างหนึ่งแต่จะเริ่มยุคใดสมัยใดยังไม่ปรากฏหลักฐาน
ในประวัติศาสตร์สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา มีกล่าวไว้ตอนหนึ่งว่า ในแผ่นดินของพระเอกาทศรถได้โปรดให้มีการแข่งเรือของพวกทหารขึ้น การแข่งเรือครั้งนั้นมีจุดประสงค์ในการซ้อมฝีพาย และมีการให้รางวัลแก่เรือที่ชนะด้วย กองทัพเรือที่เข้มแข็งที่สุดของไทยเราก็คงจะได้แก่สมัยสมเด็จพระนเรศวรมหาราช ซึ่งเรือเร็วที่ใช้ในสมัยนั้นได้แก่ เรือยาวที่เราเห็นอยู่ในปัจจุบัน คือ เมื่อครั้งพระยาจีนจันตุคิดหนีออกจากกรุงศรีอยุธยา สมเด็จพระนเรศวรและสมเด็จพระเอกาทศรถก็ใช้เรือเร็วออกติดตามจนทัน และได้รบกันเป็นสามารถ
เมื่อบาทหลวงเดอชัวซีย์ ผู้ช่วยราชทูตของพระเจ้าหลุยส์ที่ 14 ได้เข้ามาในแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราช ตามจดหมายเหตุรายวัน กล่าวถึงการแข่งเรือหลวงตอนหนึ่งว่า...
"เรือพระที่นั่งนั้นวิจิตรรจนาสง่างามยิ่งนัก สุดที่จะพรรณนาในให้ท่านฟังโดยถ้วนถี่ ได้มีฝีพายประจำเรือประมาณ 150 คน ถือพายปิดทองทุกคน พระเจ้ากรุงสยามทรงเครื่องฉลองพระองค์ล้วนแล้วไปด้วยเพชรพลอย ผีพายใส่เสื้อและสวมหมวกสีทอง เครื่องประดับก็ปิดทองด้วยเหมือนกัน ข้าพเจ้าจะพรรณาให้ท่านฟังว่าพยุหโดยชลมารค ครั้งนี้เป็นพิธีอะไรกันแน่.....
"พระเจ้ากรุงสยามเสด็จประทับทรงสำราญพระอิริยาบถ ณ พระตำหนักที่ประทับแห่งหนึ่งและเสวยพระกระยาหารที่ตำหนักนั้น พอเสวยแล้วโปรดฯ ให้เรือขุนนางที่ยศเสมอกันเข้าเทียบเป็นคู่ๆ พายแข่งกันไปยังกลุ่ม ถ้าเรือลำใดถึงพระตำหนักน้ำที่ราชวังกรุงศรีอยุธยาก่อนก็จะได้รับพระราชทานรางวัลอย่างงาม การแข่งเรือนี้เป็นสิ่งที่น่าดูมาก ฝีพายทุกคนมีความชำนิชำนาญ พายเรือคล่องแคล่ว ว่องไวยิ่งนัก การแข่งเรือครั้งนี้ ฝีพายต้องพายเรือทวนน้ำขึ้นไปตามแม่น้ำใหญ่เรือพระที่นั่งที่ทรงของพระเจ้ากรุงสยาม ถึงก่อนฝีพายจึงได้รับพระราชทานรางวัลคนละ 1 ชั่ง การแข่งเรือครั้งนี้มีระยะ 2 ลีก"
การเสด็จประพาสบางนางอิน (บางปะอิน) ของพระเจ้าอยู่หัวครั้งนี้ทางราชการรู้ว่าต้องมีการแข่งเรืออย่างแน่นอน ฉะนั้นต่างก็หาฝีพายที่มีฝีมือเข้มแข็งลงเรือ เพื่อจะได้รับพระราชทานรางวัลจากสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ความสำคัญของข้อความน้ำจึงน่าเป็นข้อสนับสนุนได้ว่า พระเจ้าแผ่นดินในสมัยโบราณนิยมการแข่งเรือเป็นอย่างมากทีเดียว
การแข่งเรือในบางกรณีดูเหมือนเป็นการเสี่ยงทายเรือมากกว่าสนุกสนาน ดังในพระราชนิพนธ์ของสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ในพระราชพิธีสิบสองเดือนว่า พระราชพิธีเดือนสิบเอ็ดในกฏมณเฑียรบาลว่ามีพิธีแข่งเรือ ความพิสดารในกฎมณเฑียรบาล กล่าวได้ดังนี้
"เดือนสิบเอ็ด การอาษยุธพิธี มีโหม่งครุ่มซ้ายขวาระบำมโหรทึกอินทเภรีดนตรี เช้าทรงพระมหามงกุฎราชาปโภค กลางวันทรงพระสุพรรณมาลา เย็นทรงพระมาลาสุกหร่ำสะพักชมพู สมเด็จพระอัครมเหสีพระภรรยาทรงพระสุวรรณมาลา นุ่งแพรลายทองทรงเสื้อ พระอัครชายาทรงพระมาลาราบ นุ่งแพรดารากรทรงเสื้อ พระสนมใส่สนองเกล้าสะพักสองบ่า สมรรถไชยเรือต้น ไกรสรมุขเรือสมเด็จพระอัครมเหสีสมรรถไชยไกรสรมุขเป็นเรือเสี่ยงทาย ถ้าสมรรถไชยแพ้ไซร้ ข้าวเหลือเกลืออิ่ม สุขเกษมเปรมประชา ถ้าสมรรถไชยชนะไซร้ จะมียุค"
จะเห็นว่าเรือสมรรถไชยและเรือไกรสรมุขเป็นเรือเสี่ยงทายตามกล่าว แต่ความจริงหาได้เป็นเช่นนั้นไม่ เรือสมรรถไชยเป็นเรือต้น ซึ่งเป็นเรือของพระเจ้าแผ่นดิน เรือไกรสรมุขเป็นเรือของพระอัครมเหสี ฉะนั้นการเสี่ยงทายเรือไกรสรมุขต้องชนะเสมอไป เพราะเป็นการปลอบขวัญประชาชน แสดงถึงความเอาอกเอาใจต่อพระมเหสีด้วย
เห็นได้ว่า ประเพณีการแข่งเรือ ตามประเพณีหลวงสมัยโบราณที่ได้กระทำกันมาตั้งแต่สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา พอมาถึงกรุงรัตนโกสินทร์ประเพณีนี้ไม่มีการปฏิบัติกัน แต่ก็ไม่ถึงกับหายสาบสูญไป มีการแข่งขันกันบ้าง สำหรับการแข่งเรือสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ที่ต้องมีการจารึกไว้ในประวัติศาสตร์ คือ การแข่งเรือวังหลวง กับวังหน้า แต่การแข่งขันครั้งนั้นไม่บริสุทธิ์ ถือว่ามีเล่ห์เหลี่ยม เกือบทำให้เกิดเรื่องยุ่งยาก
เรื่องมีอยู่ว่า ในแผ่นดินสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลก ได้มีการแข่งเรือระหว่างวังหลวงกับวังหน้าขึ้น ครั้งหนึ่งเรือวังหลวงชื่อทองปลิว เรือวังหน้าชื่อ มังกร เมื่อจับคู่เทียบฝีพายกันแล้วเห็นว่าทัดเทียมกันจะแข่งขันกันได้ก็ตกลง แต่ก่อนที่จะมีการลงมือแข่งขันได้มีข้าราชการหลวงผู้หนึ่งสืบทราบว่า ทางวังหน้าเล่นไม่ซื่อ จึงได้นำความขึ้นกราบบังคมทูลว่ากรมพระราชวังบวรฯ จัดฝีพายที่แข็งแรงซ่อนไว้ เวลาแข่งจะเอาพวกนี้ออกพายแข่ง เมื่อได้ทรงทราบจึงมีพระดำรัสว่า เล่นอย่างนี้จะเล่นด้วยอย่างไร จึงให้เลิกการแข่งเรือคราวนั้นเสีย”
จุดประสงค์ของการแข่งเรือนั้นสรุปว่า ในสมัยโบราณจัดเป็นประเพณีหลวงและเป็นการเสี่ยงทาย และในขณะเดียวกันเป็นการฝึกฝีพาย ต่อมาประชาชนธรรมดาจึงได้แข่งเรือขึ้นบ้าง จนบางแห่งถือเป็นประเพณีที่ต้องมีการแข่งขันกันเป็นประจำ ต่อมามีการขุดเรือยาวขึ้นประจำวัด และมีการฝึกซ้อมอย่าง จริงจังเพราะว่าการแข่งขันนั้น ต้องมีผู้แพ้และชนะ การแข่งเรือถือเป็นประเพณีที่นิยมกันแทบทุกภาค เช่น
ภาคเหนือ ได้แก่ จังหวัดพิจิตร พิษณุโลก น่าน
ภาคกลาง ได้แก่ จังหวัด อ่างทอง ราชบุรี ชัยนาท พระนครศรีอยุธยา สิงห์บุรี
