หนังใหญ่ เป็นสมบัติทางวัฒนธรรมไทย ซึ่งได้รับการยกย่องว่าเป็นการแสดงชั้นสูง เป็นการแสดงที่รวมศิลปะที่ทรงคุณค่าหลายแขนง ได้แก่ ด้านศิลปะการออกแบบลวดลายไทยเชิงจิตรกรรมที่มีความวิจิตรบรรจง ผสมกับฝีมือช่างแกะสลักที่ประณีต เมื่อแสดงก็จะมีการนำศิลปะทางนาฏศิลปืการละคร ที่เคลื่อนไหวอย่างได้อารมณ์ ตามเนื้อเรื่อง ประกอบกับบทพากย์ บทเจรจา บทขับร้อง ดนตรีปี่พาทย์ ทำให้เกิดความเข้าใจในเรื่องราว และให้อรรถรสทางศิลปะแก่ผู้ชมได้อย่างสมบูรณ์ การแสดงหนังใหญ่จึงมีคุณค่าทางศิลปะสูง และแสดงถึงอัจฉริยภาพของบรรพบุรุษไทยได้เป็นอย่างดี
ประวัติความเป็นมา
มหรสพที่เก่าแก่ของไทยนี้ กล่าวกันว่ามีมาตั้งแต่สมัยสุโขทัย แต่หลักฐานการแสดงหนังใหญ่เริ่มมี สมัยกรุงศรีอยุธยา ในสมัยของสมเด็จพระรามาธิบดีที่ 1 (พระเจ้าอู่ทอง)นับเป็นมหารสพที่สร้างชื่อเสียงให้กับประเทศไทย ในสมัยรัตนโกสินทร์ปรากฏหลักฐานในการแสดงหนังใหญ่ ตั้งแต่สมัยสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช (ร.1) ว่าทรงพระราชนิพนธ์บทละครเรื่องอิเหนา เพื่อใช้แสดงเพิ่มขึ้นจากเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ สมัยสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย (ร.2) มีหลักฐานการสร้างตัวหนังใหญ่และบทวรรณคดีที่ใช้ในเรื่องรามเกียรติ์ ใช้แสดงหนังใหญ่ชุดพระนครไหว ซึ่งต่อมาได้มีการนำมาเก็บไว้ ณ โรงละครแห่งชาติหลังเก่า แต่ถูกไฟไหม้เกือบหมด สมัยสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (ร.5) พบการทำหนังใหญ่ 2 แห่งได้แก่ หนังใหญ่วัดสว่างอารมณ์ จังหวัดสิงห์บุรี และหนังใหญ่วัดขนอน จังหวัดราชบุรี
ประะวัติหนังใหญ่วัดขนอน
หนังใหญ่วัดขนอน ได้มีการสร้างในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว (ร.5) ผู้ริเริ่มในการแกะสลักตัวหนังคือ ท่านพระครูศรัทธาสุนทร (หลวงปู่กล่อม) เกิดปีวอก พ.ศ.2391 มรณภาพเมื่อวันที่ 5 ธันวาคม พ.ศ.2485 รวมอายุได้ 95 ปี ท่านมีความคิดที่จะสร้างหนังใหญ่ให้มีขนาดใหญ่กว่าเดิม จึงได้ชักชวนครูอั๋ง ช่างจาด ช่างจ๊ะ และช่างพ่วง มาร่วมกันสร้าง ชุดแรกที่สร้างคือ ชุดหนุมานถวายแหวน ต่อมาได้สร้างเพิ่มอีกรวม 9 ชุด ปัจจุบันมีตัวหนัง 313 ตัว นับเป็นสมบัติวัดที่ได้ร่วมรักษาสืบทอดกันมาเป็นเพียงวัดเดียวที่มีมหรสพ เป็นของวัด มีตัวหนัง และคณะหนังใหญ่ที่สมบูรณ์อยุ่ในความอุปถัมป์ของวัดสืบทอดมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้
