จากการศึกษาทางระบาดวิทยาขององค์การอนามัยโลก พบว่าเชื้อ
ก่อโรคกลากที่พบบ่อยในคน มี 3 สกุล ได้แก่ Trichophyton,
Epidermophyton และ Microsporum ตามลำ� ดับ [2,3]
เชื้อ Dermatophytes สามารถจำ� แนกตามการเจริญของ
เชื้อออกเป็น 3 ชนิดคือ
1. Anthropophilic species คือกลุ่มเชื้อราที่มักก่อโรคใน
คน แต่ก็มีบางชนิดที่สามารถก่อโรคในสัตว์ได้ เชื้อราชนิดนี้เจริญ
ได้ดีในชั้น Keratinized tissue ทำ� ให้เชื้อสามารถแพร่กระจาย
จากคนสู่คน โดยปนเปื้อนอยู่ในสะเก็ดหรือขุยผิวหนัง เชื้อรา
กลุ่มที่จัดอยู่ใน Anthropophilic เช่น Trichophyton rubrum,
Microsporum audouinii, Epidermophyton floccosum
เป็นต้น
2. Zoophilic species เชื้อรากลุ่มนี้มักก่อให้เกิดพยาธิ
สภาพในสัตว์ แต่สามารถแพร่เชื้อมาสู่คนได้ ซึ่งการรับเชื้อจาก
สัตว์มาสู่คนจะก่อให้เกิดพยาธิสภาพที่รุนแรง มีการอักเสบค่อน
ข้างมาก เชื้อราที่จัดอยู่ในกลุ่ม Zoophilic เช่น Trichophyton
mentagrophytes var. mentagrophytes, Microsporum
canis เป็นต้น
3. Geophilic species จัดเป็นกลุ่มเชื้อราที่เจริญได้ดี
ในดิน พืช และสิ่งแวดล้อม พบว่าบางชนิดมีคุณสมบัติช่วยย่อย
สาร keratin ในธรรมชาติ เช่น Microsporum gypseum คน
สามารถติดเชื้อกลุ่มนี้ได้จากการสัมผัส หรือทางรอยถลอก หรือ
บาดแผลบนผิวหนัง
นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่าเชื้อ Dermatophytes มีการกระจาย
ในแต่ละภูมิภาคของโลกที่แตกต่างกัน ขึ้นอยู่กับสภาพภูมิอากาศ
ความชื้น และลักษณะการอยู่อาศัย รวมถึงพฤติกรรมของประชากร
สำ� หรับเชื้อ Dermatophytes ที่พบบ่อยในเขตร้อนชื้น ได้แก่
Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum audouinii,
Trichophyton rubrum เป็นต้น[1-3] ทั้งนี้ Trichophyton
rubrum ยังเป็นกลุ่มเชื้อราที่พบได้บ่อยในประเทศในแถบเอเชีย
