ตำนานเรื่องพญาคางคก เมื่อครั้งพระพุทธเจ้าถือชาติกำเนิดเป็นพญาคางคก ได้อาศัยอยู่ใต้ร่มโพธิ์ใหญ่ ด้วยเหตุใดไม่แจ้งพญาแถนเทพเจ้าแห่งฝนโกรธเคืองโลกมนุษย์มาก จึงแกล้งไม่ให้ฝนตกนานถึง ๗ เดือน ทำให้เกิดความลำบากยากแค้นอย่างแสนสาหัสแก่มวลมนุษย์ สัตว์และพืช จนกระทั่งพากันล้มตายเป็นจำนวนมาก พวกที่แข็งแรงก็รอดตายและได้พากันมารวมกลุ่มใต้ต้นโพธิ์ใหญ่กับพญาคางคก สรรพสัตว์ทั้งหลายจึงได้หารือกันเพื่อจะหาวิธีการปราบพญาแถน ที่ประชุมได้ตกลงกันให้พญานาคียกทัพไปรบกับพญาแถน แต่ก็ต้องพ่ายแพ้

จากนั้นจึงให้พญาต่อแตนยกทัพไปปราบ แต่ก็ต้องพ่ายแพ้อีกเช่นกัน ทำให้พวกสรรพสัตว์ทั้งหลายเกิดความท้อถอย หมดกำลังใจและสิ้นหวัง ได้แต่รอวันตายในที่สุด พญาคางคกจึงขออาสาที่จะไปรบกับพญาแถน จึงได้วางแผนในการรบโดยปลวกทั้งหลายก่อจอมปลวกขึ้นไปจนถึงเมืองพญาแถน เพื่อเป็นเส้นทางให้บรรดาสรรพสัตว์ทั้งหลายได้เดินทางไปสู่เมืองพญาแถน ซึ่งมีมอด แมลงป่อง ตะขาบ มด สำหรับมอดได้รับหน้าที่ให้ทำการกัดเจาะด้ามอาวุธที่ทำด้วยไม้ทุกชนิด ส่วนแมลงป่องและตะขาบให้ซ่อนตัวอยู่ตามกองฟืนที่ใช้หุงต้มอาหาร และอยู่ตามเสื้อผ้าของไพร่พลพญาแถนทำหน้าที่กัดต่อย หลังจากวางแผนเรียบร้อย กองทัพพญาคางคกก็เดินทางเพื่อปฏิบัติหน้าที่การรบ มอดทำหน้าที่กัดเจาะด้ามอาวุธ แมลงป่องและตะขาบกัดต่อยไพร่พลของพญาแถนจนเจ็บปวด ในที่สุดพญาแถนจึงได้ยอมแพ้และตกลงทำสัญญาสงบศึกกับพญาคางคก ดังนี้
