เพนิซิลิน หรือ ฟีนอกซิลเมตทิลเพนิซิ

เพนิซิลิน หรือ ฟีนอกซิลเมตทิลเพนิซิลลิน (Phenoxymethylpenicillin) เป็นยาที่ใช้รักษาการติดเชื้อจากแบคทีเรีย ค้นพบโดย อเล็คซานเดอร์ เฟลมมิง (Alexander Fleming) เมื่อวันที่ 28 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2471 ซึ่งขณะนั้นเขาทำงานเป็นอาจารย์อยู่ที่วิทยาลัยเซนต์แมรี่

ว่ากันว่าประวัติการค้นพบยาเพนิซิลิน นี้เกิดขึ้นมาจากความผิดพลาดขณะที่ อเล็คซานเดอร์ เฟลมิง กำลังทำการทดลองเชื้อแบคทีเรีย สเตปฟิโลคอกคัส (Staphylococcus) ที่ทำให้เกิดโรคเซฟติซีเมีย (Septicemia) หรือภาวการณ์ติดเชื้อในกระแสเลือด เขาได้เพาะเชื้อแบคทีเรียใส่พืชทะเลลงบนจานทดลอง และปิดฝาให้สนิท เก็บไว้ในอุณหภูมิ 37 องศาเซลเซียส แต่แล้ววันหนึ่งผู้ช่วยของเขาได้ลืมปิดฝาจานทดลอง ทำให้พบว่ามีเชื้อราสีเขียวชนิดหนึ่งขึ้นที่จานเต็มไปหมด บริเวณรอบ ๆ เชื้อรานี้กลายเป็นวงใส ๆ และแบคทีเรียสเตปฟิโลคอกคัสถูกฆ่าเป็นวงกว้าง ซึ่งต่อมาพบว่าราเหล่านี้ก็คือ ราเพนนิซิลเลียม (Pennicillium family) นั่นเอง
