เป็นวัดใหญ่อยู่กลางเมือง สร้างสมัยพ่อขุนศรีอินทราทิตย์ มีพระเจดีย์ต่างๆ รวมถึง 200 องค์ เป็นวัดสำคัญประจำกรุงสุโขทัย มีพระเจดีย์มหาธาตุ ทรงพุ่มข้าวบิณฑ์ศิลปะแบบสุโขทัยแท้ตั้งเป็นเจดีย์ประธาน ล้อมรอบด้วยเจดีย์ 8 องค์ บนฐานเดียวกัน คือ ปรางค์ศิลาแลงตั้งอยู่ที่ทิศทั้ง 4 และเจดีย์แบบศรีวิชัยผสมลังกาก่อด้วยอิฐอยู่ที่มุม ด้านตะวันออกบนเจดีย์ประธานมีวิหารขนาด ใหญ่ก่อ ด้วยศิลาแลง มีแท่นซึ่งเคยเป็นที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปสำริดที่ใหญ่ที่สุดในประเทศไทย คือ พระศรีศากยมุนี ปัจจุบัน ได้รับการเคลื่อนย้ายไปอยู่ที่วัดสุทัศน์ฯ กรุงเทพฯ ที่ด้านเหนือและด้าน ไต้เจดีย์มหาธาตุมีพระพุทธรูปยืนภายในซุ้มพระ เรียกว่า "พระอัฎฐารศ" ด้านใต้ยังพบแท่งหินเรียกว่า "ขอมดำดิน"
