ในกรุงราชคฤห์มีช่างจัดดอกไม้คนหนึ่ง ชื่อ "สุมนะ" ทุกๆ เช้า เขาจะนำดอกมะลิ 8 ทะนาน ไปถวายพระเจ้าพิมพิสาร และจะได้ทรัพย์มาเป็นค่าดอกไม้วันละ 8 กหาปณะเป็นประจำ วันหนึ่ง ขณะที่เขาถือดอกไม้จะนำไปถวายพระราชา พระบรมศาสดาเสด็จมาบิณฑบาต พร้อมด้วยหมู่ภิกษุสงฆ์จำนวนมาก พระพุทธองค์ทรงเปล่งฉัพพรรณรังสีออกจากพระวรกาย นายสุมนะเห็นแล้วเกิดความเลื่อมใสศรัทธามาก อยากจะถวายดอกมะลิทั้ง 8 ทะนาน ที่ถืออยู่ในมือ เพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชา

ส่วนอีก 2 ทะนาน อยู่ข้างหลัง กำแพงดอกไม้ทั้งหมดนี้ ลอยไปพร้อมกับพระบรมศาสดา เมื่อพระพุทธองค์ทรงพระดำเนิน กำแพงดอกมะลิทั้งหมดก็ลอยตามไป เมื่อประทับยืน กำแพงดอกมะลิก็หยุดอยู่กับที่เหมือนกัน
