การเรียนการสอนแบบเน้นภาระงานคือวิธีการเรียนการสอนที่มอง ภาระงานเป็นหัวใจสำคัญต่อกระบวนการเรียนรู้ กระบวนการเรียนรู้ดังกล่าวจึงเป็นชุดกิจกรรมภาระงานเพื่อการสื่อสารและสัมพันธ์ กับวัตถุประสงค์ของหลักสูตร
Nunan (1991) ได้ให้โครงร่างของ "ห้าลักษณะของวิธีการเรียนการสอนแบบเน้นภาระงาน ” ดังนี้

 ให้โอกาสผู้เรียนมุ่งเน้นไม่เพียง แต่ในภาษา แต่ยังเน้นกระบวนการเรียนรู้อีกด้วย
 ให้ผู้เรียนได้ใช้ประสบการณ์ส่วนตัวของผู้เรียนมามีส่วนร่วมในการเรียนรู้ในห้องเรียน
 พยายามที่จะเชื่อมโยงการเรียนรู้ภาษาในห้องเรียนกับการใช้ภาษานอกห้องเรียน

2. การเรียงลำดับและการแยกประเภท (ordering and sorting) เช่น จัดแยกประเภทสิ่งดี ๆ และสิ่งที่ไม่ดีที่แมวมักจะทำเก็บรวบรวมคำแนะนำจากคนอื่น ๆ ในกลุ่มของคุณ พูดคุยกันและ ตัดสินใจว่าข้อใดที่มีเป็นประโยชน์มากที่สุดแล้วเรียงลำดับจากประโยชน์มากที่สุดไปน้อยที่สุด
