          ฟิลิปปินส์เป็นประเทศที่ประกอบไปด้วยเกาะน้อยใหญ่ที่มีมากถึง 7,107 เกาะ ซึ่งเมื่อรวมแล้วจะมีพื้นที่ทั้งหมดประมาณ 300,000 ตารางกิโลเมตร (เป็นพื้นดิน 298,170 ตารางกิโลเมตร) ถ้าลองเทียบขนาดแล้วก็จะมีขนาดประมาณ 3 ใน 5 ของประเทศไทย
          ประเทศแห่งนี้ตั้งอยู่ในมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก ทางทิศเหนือและทิศตะวันตกติดกับทะเลจีนใต้ ทางทิศใต้และทิศตะวันออกติดกับมหาสมุทรแปซิฟิก

“ภูมิประเทศ”           หมู่เกาะของฟิลิปปินส์จะเป็นหมู่เกาะของเทือกเขาหินใหม่ ทำให้มักเกิดแผ่นดินไหวและภูเขาไฟระเบิดอยู่บ่อยครั้ง และในปัจจุบันนี้ก็ยังมีภูเขาไฟที่พร้อมจะปะทุอยู่อย่างน้อย 22 ลูก โดยเฉพาะภูเขาไฟมายอน (Mayon) พินาตูโบ (Pinatubo) และทาล (Taal) นอกจากนี้ฟิลิปปินส์ยังมีที่ราบแคบๆ ซึ่งจะมีที่ราบที่สำคัญก็คือ ที่ราบตอนกลางของเกาะลูซอนที่เรียกว่า ที่ราบมะนิลา ถือเป็นที่ราบที่ใหญ่ที่สุด
          ฟิลิปปินส์แบ่งออกเป็น 3 หมู่เกาะหลักๆ คือ ลูซอน (Luzon) เป็นหมู่เกาะทางตอนเหนือของประเทศ วิสายาส์ (Visayas) อยู่ทางตอนกลางของประเทศ และ มินดาเนา (Mindanao) อยู่ทางตอนใต้



“ภูมิอากาศ”
          ฟิลิปปินส์อยู่ในพื้นที่มรสุมเขตร้อน มี 3 ฤดูกาล คือ ฤดูร้อน (ช่วงเดือนมีนาคม – พฤษภาคม) ฤดูฝน (ช่วงเดือนมิถุนายน – ตุลาคม) และฤดูหนาว (ช่วงเดือนพฤศจิกายน – กุมภาพันธ์) และจากผลของการอยู่ในเขตมรสุม ฟิลิปปินส์จึงต้องประสบภัยธรรมชาติบ่อยครั้งจากพายุและไต้ฝุ่น


ประชากร
  มีจำนวนประชากรประมาณ 94 ล้านคน ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นชนพื้นเมืองของฟิลิปปินส์ที่เรียกว่า “ชาวมลายู” และรองลงมาจะเป็นลูกครึ่งจีน ลูกครึ่งสเปน และลูกครึ่งอเมริกัน
                                                      การเมืองการปกครอง           ปกครองตามระบอบประชาธิปไตย โดยมีประธานาธิบดีที่มาจากการเลือกตั้งเป็นประมุขและเป็นหัวหน้าคณะผู้ บริหารประเทศ ฟิลิปปินส์จะแบ่งออกเป็น 17 เขต (79 จังหวัด และ 117 เมือง) โดยแบ่งเป็นหมู่เกาะลูซอน (Luzon) มี 8 เขต หมู่เกาะวิสายาส์ (Visayas) มี 3 เขต และหมู่เกาะมินดาเนา (Mindanao) มี 6 เขต
     

เศรษฐกิจและทรัพยากรที่สำคัญ
          ฟิลิปปินส์เป็นประเทศเกษตรกรรม แต่มีเนื้อที่ที่ใช้ในการเพาะปลูกอยู่อย่างจำกัด จึงทำให้พื้นที่เพาะปลูกส่วนใหญ่อยู่บริเวณที่ราบต่ำและเนินเขาที่ปรับให้ เป็นขั้นบันได พืชเศรษฐกิจสำคัญ คือ มะพร้าว อ้อย ป่านอบากา และข้าวเจ้า นอกจากนี้ยังมีแร่ส่งออกที่สำคัญ คือ เหล็กโครไมต์ ทองแดง เงิน
          *เมื่อพ.ศ.2064 หลักจากที่เฟอร์ดินานด์ มาเจแลน (Ferdinand Magellan) นักสำรวจชาวโปรตุเกสค้นพบหมู่เกาะฟิลิปปินส์ ทำให้ชาวตะวันตกได้รู้จักหมู่เกาะฟิลิปปินส์
          *สเปนพยายามเข้ามาทำให้คนพื้นเมืองหันมานับถือศาสนาคริสต์จนทำให้เกิดความ ขัดแย้ง และในที่สุดสเปนก็เข้ามายึดครองฟิลิปปินส์ยาวนานกว่า 300 ปี
          *ต่อมาเกิดขบวนการเรียกร้องอิสรภาพที่นำโดยโฮเซ รีซัล (Jose Rizal) ปัญญาชนชาวฟิลิปปินส์ ซึ่งก็ได้รับโทษประหารในเวลาต่อมา
          *ในพ.ศ.2441 สหรัฐอเมริกาและสเปนเกิดความขัดแย้งกันจนเกิดเป็นสงคราม แล้วสหรัฐอเมริกาก็ได้เข้ามาครอบครองฟิลิปปินส์แทนสเปนนานถึง 14 ปี (ตั้งแต่ช่วง พ.ศ.2442- พ.ศ.2456)
          *หลังจากนั้น ก็เกิดสงครามต่อต้านสหรัฐฯ ที่เรียกว่า  Philippine American War ก่อนจะได้รับเอกราชอย่างสมบูรณ์ในวันที่ 4 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.2489
