เทศบาลในประเทศไทยปัจจุบันแบ่งออกเป็น 3 ประเภทตามจำนวนประชากรและรายได้ของเทศบาลนั้น ๆ ในพระราชบัญญัติเทศบาล พุทธศักราช 2496 มาตรา 9, 10, 11 ได้กำหนดขนาดเทศบาลดังนี้
