เอกสารจากแหล่งภายนอก (External Document) หมายถึง เอกสารที่มีต้นกำเนิดมาจากภายนอกองค์กร แต่มีการนำมาใช้งานหรืออ้างอิงถึงในการปฏิบัติงานขององค์กร เช่น
• เอกสารที่เป็นมาตรฐานต่างๆ เช่น ISO 27001
• คู่มือการใช้งานระบบ (Operating Manual)
• เอกสารจากลูกค้าหรือบริษัทคู่ค้า




หน่วยงานที่เป็นผู้ใช้งานเอกสารจากแหล่งภายนอกเหล่านี้ต้องรับผิดชอบในการตรวจสอบการปรับปรุงเปลี่ยนแปลงเวอร์ชั่นของเอกสารภายนอกที่นำมาใช้ เพื่อพิจารณาจัดหาเอกสารเวอร์ชั่นใหม่เข้ามาใช้งานภายในองค์กรตามความเหมาะสม โดยจะต้องแจ้ง DCC ทุกครั้งที่นำเอกสารใหม่หรือเวอร์ชั่นใหม่เข้ามาใช้งาน
DCC ต้องทำการบันทึกเอกสารจากแหล่งภายนอกทั้งหมดที่มีการนำเข้ามาใช้ภายในองค์กร ลงใน “บัญชีควบคุมเอกสารภายนอก” (External Document List)
