มะขาม เป็นไม้เขตร้อน มีถิ่นกำเนิดอยู่ในทวีปแอฟริกาแถบประเทศซูดาน ต่อมามีการนำเข้ามาในประเทศแถบเขตร้อนของเอเชีย และประเทศแถบละตินอเมริกา และในปัจจุบันมีมากในเม็กซิโก

ลักษณะเฉพาะ
มะขามเป็นไม้ยืนต้นขนาดกลางจนถึงขนาดใหญ่แตกกิ่งก้านสาขามากไม่มีหนาม เปลือกต้นขรุขระและหนา สีน้ำตาลอ่อน ใบ เป็นใบประกอบ ใบเล็กออกตามกิ่งก้านใบเป็นคู่ ใบย่อยเป็นรูปขอบขนาน ปลายใบและโคนใบมน ประกอบ ด้วยใบย่อย 10–15 คู่ แต่ละใบย่อยมีขนาดเล็ก กว้าง 2–5 มม. ยาว 1–2 ซม. ออกรวมกันเป็นช่อยาว 2–16 ซม. ดอก ออกตามปลายกิ่ง ดอกมีขนาดเล็ก กลีบดอกสีเหลืองและมีจุดประสีแดง/ม่วงแดงอยู่กลางดอก ผล เป็นฝักยาว รูปร่างยาวหรือโค้ง ยาว 3-20 ซม. ฝักอ่อนมีเปลือกสีเขียวอมเทา สีน้ำตาลเกรียม เนื้อในติดกับเปลือก เมื่อแก่ฝักเปลี่ยนเป็นเปลือกแข็งกรอบหักง่าย สีน้ำตาล เนื้อในกลายเป็นสีน้ำตาลหุ้มเมล็ด เนื้อมีรสเปรี้ยว และ/หรือหวาน ซึ่งฝักหนึ่ง ๆ จะมี/หุ้มเมล็ด 3–12 เมล็ด เมล็ดแก่จะแบนเป็นมัน และมีสีน้ำตาล
